The DLSU Green Batters dominated the National University Bulldogs, 17-5, in the UAAP Season 80 Baseball Tournament, Sunday, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Green and White started off hot in the first inning as Paolo Salud, Angel Tantuico, and Boo Barandiaran consecutively hit singles, followed by triples from Iggy Escaño and Cholo Dominguez, scoring four. On the defensive side, Diego Lozano started on the mound as he did not let any Bulldog get in scoring position with the help of the flashy plays of Escaño on first base and Jose Antonio Acuña on second base.
The score remained 4-0 until the fifth inning when Francis Gesmundo bombed a two-run homer to the left field, extending the Green Batters’ lead to six. The Sampaloc-based hitters finally got runners in scoring position during their turn of the inning and converted, cutting down DLSU’s lead to one, 6-5.
The Taft-based squad rallied back in the seventh inning after Salud, Tantuico, and Gesmundo loaded the bases and Escaño brought them home with a 3-RBI double. Dominguez also brought Escaño home with an RBI double but got injured running to second. The seventh inning ended with DLSU up, 10-5.
The Green Batters weren’t done wreaking havoc as their base running training proved effective. As they were able to score four on singles from Salud, Barandiaran, and Andre Palacios. At the end of the eighth inning, DLSU led, 14-5.
Even until the last inning, the Green and White showed their batting and running prowess as Salinas, Tuwi Park, Tantuico, and Jameson Esparas got hits for another three points. DLSU ended the game with a 1-2-3 inning on defense.
