DLSU Green Spikers succumb to UST Growling Tigers

The De La Salle University Green Spikers lost to the UST Growling Tigers in four sets, 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 21-25, on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The Green Spikers were able to equalize the intensity of the Growling Tigers throughout each set. However, La Salle committed errors towards the end of the periods.

Both teams were neck-and-neck as they showed consistency during the first set. Attacks from Arjay Onia kept La Salle on tail with Cris Dumago tying the game at 15 after a powerful back row kill. Raymark Woo, then, showed his pace as a veteran as he went down the line. JD Delos Reyes knotted it again at 18-all. But UST’s Manuel Medina pushed their lead to four, 23-19, as they eventually won the set.

Another tight period as the second set heated up early. Errors from both sides tied the game at 8-8 before Joshua Umandal boosted up UST by three consecutive points. Dumago and Onia stopped the bleeding at 13-15 together with Woo’s off the block at 14-16. A one-man block by Reyes prompted UST to call for time as La Salle closes in at 18-19. Errors hurt La Salle as they yield another set to the Tigers.

The Green and White made the tables turn as they started the third set with back-to-back aces from Woo to build an early 4-1 lead. Reyes came through with a block and a quick combination play which put La Salle up by six, 9-3. The lead went up to as much as eleven points as Woo scored twice off the blockers’ hands, while Dumago pulling off a drop, 16-5. DLSU continued to pounce on UST to extend the game.

The Taft-based squad kept it going in the fourth set. A quick attack and a block from Reyes gave La Salle another draw at 6-all. The teams answered back for every point made against them in a do-or-die set. A crosscourt kill from Onia cut the deficit to two, 17-19, but UST was a force to reckon with as the Green Spikers failed to force a fifth set.

With the current standings still in disposition, La Salle stooped down to 4-7, while UST climbed up to 5-6.

The DLSU Green Spikers will continue to fight against the Adamson Soaring Falcons on April 4, 10 AM, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

DLSU Green Booters shock FEU Tamaraws late in second-round faceoff

The De La Salle University Green Booters prevailed over the FEU Tamaraws, 1-0, in the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football Tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, Sunday.

The game started off hot as early attempts came from both sides. After a series of passes, La Salle’s defense remained tight as La Salle’s goal keeper Rafael De Guzman stood strong to keep the base clean.

The match began to intensify as FEU’s keeper got injured at the 17th minute. He was brought out of the field and was given emergency medical assistance.

La Salle’s Noel Brago went for a free kick at 30’ and followed it up by a corner kick at the 37th minute mark.

Rallies were kept alive, yet a yellow card was shown to Alcantara after a series of good attempts from the Green and White. At the end of the first half, both teams were scoreless.

The heat turned into fire as a red card was given to FEU after a gritty encounter wherein FEU allegedly ran over La Salle’s Rafael Siggaoat. Amidst this, La Salle tried to be as professional as possible and continued to fight clean and fair.

Non-stop free kicks and corner kicks came from both wings. Attempts from Zubiri tried to push through but were still denied by FEU’s close defense. Jerby Bernaldez finally pierced in a goal at the 89th minute.

After a morale-boosting win, Bernaldez hopes that the team continues to rack up wins to inch closer into the semifinals.

“Now that we’re at the third spot, we’re looking to win more so that we will enter the Final Four,” he said.

Coach Hans Peter-Smit, on the other hand, did not mind the scuffle that happened and stated that it is all part of the game.

“No matter what, these are kids. It’s part of the game, tempers will flare up, they’ve had their chances that adds up more to the frustration. I understand that,” the fiery mentor said.

In addition, Coach said he would expect the Green Booters to ‘not be over zealous and continue to play well so far.’

The DLSU Green Booters will face the UP Fighting Maroons on Thursday, 4 PM at the FEU FERN Football Field.

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers bowed to the Adamson University Soaring Lady Falcons in four thrilling sets, 18-25, 25-15, 19-25, 22-25, in the first round of the UAAP Season 80 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre, Saturday.

The Lady Spikers started cold due to consecutive errors, but not until team captain, Majoy Baron got the first point for the Lady Spikers, 1-4. Meanwhile, Desiree Cheng helped out with back-to-back aces, trimming Adamson’s lead down to two, 4-6. However, the Lady Falcons remained furious as hits from Mylene Paat and Mary Joy Dacoron sent the game to its first technical timeout with the Lady Spikers trailing, 4-8. Aduke Ogunsaya stopped the bleeding with a quick hit, followed by an ace from Kim Dy. Adamson continued to score points as La Salle went down with errors, heading into the second technical timeout. The Lady Spikers tried to catch up as Tin Tiamzon got in full rotation, blocking former Lady Spiker, Eli Soyud. Dy scored a quick, but kills from the Lady Falcons were too much to handle. Tiamzon committed a service error as La Salle dropped the opening set, 18-25.

The Green and White bounced back in the second set. A cross-court hit from Arianne Layug gave La Salle the lead, followed by an offensive gift from Ogunsaya, 5-3. Adamson tried to close in with an ace from Soyud, but the Lady Falcons gave away points from errors, just enough for La Salle to take a good distance. Dy, then, ended the set with a service ace to give La Salle a 25-15 win in the second set.

La Salle jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the third set. Soyud rattled the Lady Spikers with a hard down-the-line kill, 6-4. Adamson remained close until Jema Galanza gave the first lead of Adamson in the set, 8-7. Michelle Cobb found a hole in the middle to tie it up at 9-all. Dy widened the lead to 16-11 with another crosscourt hit. However, the Lady Falcons forced Lady Spikers to multiple errors, erasing the latter’s lead, and eventually overtaking, 17-18. Adamson continued with consecutive kills and nailed down La Salle at 19, taking the set, 25-19.

Both teams had another neck-and-neck start in the fourth set of the game.  May Luna scored a down-the-line, giving La Salle a three-point lead, 8-5. Paat, then, went furious with six straight points, converting a 9-6 deficit to a commanding 10-17 cushion. Tiamzon scored with a kill as La Salle stayed within shouting distance, 14-18. But, consecutive hits from Chiara Permentilla got the Lady Falcons to match point, 24-19. La Salle tried to close in with an ace from Ogunsaya, followed by a kill from Cheng, 22-24, but Adamson’s momentum was too much for La Salle as the latter dropped the set, 22-25.

The DLSU Lady Spikers will try to bounce back as they renew their rivalry with the Ateneo Lady Eagles on Saturday, 4 PM at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
