The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers demolished the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 72-49, for a rousing opening in their 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup campaign on Sunday, May 5, at the tournament’s namesake venue.
Both teams struggled to find their respective grooves in the opening frame, firing misses after another, finishing the low-scoring quarter, 12-11, in favor of UST.
The new-look Green Archers, led by new team captain Andrei Caracut, came alive in the second canto. The incoming fifth year guard out waxed hot after pouring in 15 of his 19 points. With help from the whole squad, the Green Archers rode on an 11-0 run sparked by a triple from Caracut that handed them the lead, 16-14. The Taft-based squad carried the momentum for a 39-27 advantage at the break.
While La Salle finally found their offensive possessions, the España-based squad continued to struggle in the second half. The Green Archers limited the Growling Tigers to just eight third quarter points. Incoming fourth year playmaker Aljun Melecio capitalized with his Mele-show, converting not only scoring-wise, but also dishing out to his mates. The Green-and-White pushed their advantage to 21, 50-29, after a one-two play courtesy of Melecio and UAAP Season 81 Mythical Team member Justine Baltazar.
Even with the huge cushion, the Taft-based squad continued to hustle for every possession. A Baltazar steal led to a spectacular play by Melecio that was converted by Caracut gave them a 25-point lead, 62-37. To make matters worse, bench players were also playing well for DLSU, with Gabe Capacio hitting the nail on the coffin with a trey that extended their advantage to 27, 70-43.
Catch the DLSU Green Archers (1-0) in their next outing as they face former Green Archer Ricci Rivero and the rest of the UP Fighting Maroons (0-1) on Sunday, May 12, still at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
