The De La Salle University Green Archers scored a dominating win against the FEU Tamaraws, 84-71 to book a finals seat in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Preseason tournament yesterday afternoon.
From the opening tip, the starters went firing from all cylinders as Thomas Torres scored to build the Archers’ double-digit separation at 16-6 halfway in the first period. The Green-and-white eventually ended up scoring 26 efficient points at the end of the first ten minutes of action with their usual core doing the damage offensively.
Good ball movement for the Archers maintained their grip against the Tamaraws and extended their lead to 21 at one point. The hot shooting somewhat cooled down for La Salle as FEU had an 8-3 scoring run to end the second quarter. However, it was still DLSU who entered the 10-minute halftime break still up by a baker’s dozen.
The transition game worked for the Taft-based squad during the third quarter as they were able to maintain the lead. Majority of the Archers’ baskets came off assists while Larry Muyang completed a three-point play to make it a 58-41 game. Jeron Teng also caught fire late in the frame as they maintained the 13-point cushion heading into the fourth.
FEU’s duo of Mike Tolomia and Raymar Jose provided the needed scoring to pull the Tamaraws within seven, 64-57 at the opening minutes of the last quarter. Fortunately for the Green Archers, La Salle responded with an 11-2 counter with their defensive pressure also settling in. The final run was necessary to seal the deal and book their seat in the finals.
Four players entered double-digit in scoring for La Salle led by Jeron Teng’s 19. Torres ended up not only scoring 18 markers, but also grabbing 10 boards as well.
On the other hand, the San Beda Red Lions remained composed during the late stretch of their game against JRU in their own semi-final match. The NCAA titleholders squandered a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter but escaped the furious run by the Heavy Bombers to complete the duel in the finals to be played on Sunday afternoon.
The two heavyweight squads will clash anew and renew a 2014 Filoil championship rematch. In the finale last year, La Salle took the crown in a come-from-behind fashion and won the winner-take-all game, 71-66. This year however, the teams will miss the services of Prince Rivero and Baser Amer, due to their inclusion in the SEA Games tournament.
Back in the opening day of eliminations, San Beda won the match in a thrilling overtime match against the Green Archers. The two teams also met in the PCCL finale months ago wherein the Mendiola-based cagers took the title. On Sunday, we determine if La Salle can retain its preseason crown against their NCAA nemesis, 5pm at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
