DLSU Green Archers drop Filoil season opener against San Beda

The DLSU Green Archers fall to the San Beda Red Lions with the final score 80-86. This was one of the preseason openers for the FilOil Flying V Premier Cup. Baser Amer of SBC put the smack down on DLSU by putting up 26 points while on the defensive end Ola Adeogun blocked 4 shots and anchored his team’s defense. Rising rookie, Andrei Caracut of La Salle, made 22 points with six 3-pointers in his debut as a Green Archer.

The game started quickly for the San Beda Red Lions as they were able to garner a double-digit lead early. Defense was a huge factor against the Green Archers as they had a huge scoring drought during the first half. The Taft-based squad had to take on a full court press made by the Red Lions. This forced a lot of missed shots and turnovers. Arnold Van Opstal gave his best effort to contain Ola Adeogun but to no avail. Adeogun was the defensive anchor for the Mendiola-based squad as he helped alter shots and even block them. With San Beda’s defense, the Green Archers shot 33% on the field.

On the Lasallian side, the Green Archers tried to catch up with the Red Lions by making important & timely buckets. The Josh Torralba and Kib Montalbo combo was able to connect and produce needed points for the Green & White squad.

Scoring came very tough for La Salle, except for one Archer. The new star recruit of DLSU, Andrei Caracut, was able to shoot near 50% in the game. He finished his 1st half campaign with 17 points and tried to chase down San Beda’s lead. The 1st half was highlighted with San Beda’s defense and hustle, which garnered them an eight point lead. Halftime ended with the score 37-45.

In the 2nd half, a tired Bedan lineup was seen in most possessions. Having played an up tempo offense and a full court trap on defense, it hit the San Beda team hard. Head coach of San Beda, Jamike Jarin did admit that his minutes distribution was questionable. With fatigued competition, La Salle took advantage of the situation.

The Green Archers were able to force turnovers; most turnovers made by San Beda occurred during second half. With Prince Rivero, the Taft-based squad was able to out hustle the Red Lions most of the time. By making much needed buckets and hustle plays, DLSU was able to chase down the lead.

During the dying seconds of the game, the La Salle squad was able to bring up their game. By the 4th quarter, the lead was within two possessions. A steal made by Kib Montalbo and dish coming from Andrei Caracut, Jeron Teng made a three-point play, this deadlocked the game at 76. La Salle had the chance to escape with the win but was caught by the clutch defense made by San Beda.

Overtime came and became disastrous for DLSU. They made unlikely trunovers and couldn’t produce offensively. They were only able to make 4 points during the extra period while san Beda clinched the win by making a 10-point run. Clearly, the Green Archers were once again out hustled by a rather replenished Red Lions squad.

The next matchup for DLSU would be against Lyceum of the Philippines on May 6 at the FilOil Flying V Arena. Continue to support the Green Archers as they defend their FilOil crown in this preseason tournament.
