The DLSU Lady Archers dropped their first UAAP Season 78 against the defending champion NU Lady Bulldogs earlier at the MOA Arena.
As expected, NU did not make the game easy for the Taft-based squad. UAAP Season 77 Most Valuable Player, Afril Bernardino spearheaded the Lady Bulldogs with 15 markers. Back to back with Ria Nabal who scored 12 points throughout the game. NU led the entire four quarters with great defensive play and attacks.
Making a name for herself, Khate Castillo had 15 points and 3 three pointers in the game. Supporting her are Chay Vergara and Camille Claro having 14 and 13 points respectively.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs tried their bench players at play, which gave DLSU the chance to rally against them. The Lady Archers led by Claro unleashed a 10-0 run in the last two minutes of the quarter. Later on, Claro was pulled out of the game due to a hyperextension of her knee, pressuring Lady Archer Snow Peñaranda to support the team with timely shots. However, it was not enough to snatch away the victory, 78-90.
Starters Jamie Roxas and Alyanna Ong with the support of Ara Abaca charged NU during the start of the second half. They took advantage of the Lady Bulldogs’ penalty situation to cut the lead with free throws but NU answered with back to back baskets from Shelley Gupilan creating a 26 point lead at the end of the quarter.
NU dominated La Salle early in the game with a 23-17 advantage during the first ten minutes of the game. During the 1st quarter, Vergara hit two shots in the rainbow country, which cut the lead of NU down to 3. La Salle began strengthening their defensive end in the second, but NU managed to outscore the Lady Archers, 41-32.
The debuting head coach of the Lady Archers, Cholo Villanueva points out that the team is still adjusting in the game. Although it was not the outcome they hoped for, he is still confident with the girls. “It was not impressive, but the team has still so much to give, we just need to adjust and train harder,” says coach Villanueva. Asked if Claro will play in the next game, he said that it is not yet decided. If Claro will be out, it will be a big disadvantage for the Taft-based squad. Team captain Ong is also disappointed at the result, explaining that there is too much excitement inside the court that they did not play their roles well. “We practiced defense, boxing out and attacks but siguro hindi lang namin naayos mabuti,” Ong adds.
With this loss, the Lady Archers look to bounce back in their next game which will be against University of the East on September 13, 1pm at the Blue Eagle Gym.
