DLSU Shuttlers send UE Warriors crashing down!
The De La Salle University Green and Lady Shuttlers edge the University of the East Warriors in domineering fashion in the UAAP 79 Badminton tournament, September 28 at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Court.
Green Shuttlers bouncing back
Coming from their bitter loss against rivals Ateneo last Sunday, the Green Shuttlers showed their might after pouncing on the hapless UE Red Warriors, 4-1.
Green Shuttler Andrew Pineda started off the match against Red Warrior Arman Manlalangit. The first set saw a heated exchange of attacks and errors between the two but Pineda emerged from the get-go to claim the first game for DLSU, 21-18, 21-17.
Straying away from their usual lineup, head coach Owen Lopez and the rest of the Green Shuttlers let Cayel Pajarillo banner the team against UE’s Benjamin Silva. Both players exchanged runs but Pajarillo proved to be the more offensive shuttler among the two to seal the deal for the Green Shuttlers with both sets finishing in 21-17 each.
In the first doubles match, Kenneth and Bee Monterubrio faced the Red Warrior tandem of AJ David and Clarence Camacho. The MonteruBros led the first set 18-14 until UE pulled off an impressive 4-0 run to tie the set, 18-all. After an attack from the younger Monterubio, two points from David let UE to set point but the elder Monterubio shook off the set scare and fired three markers to get the first set, 22-20. Meanwhile the second set saw a feistier MonteruBros who ended the game, 21-14.
At this point on, the Green Shuttlers have already claimed the matchup against UE, 3-0, but the duo of Anton Cayanan and Jerick Obaob showed no mercy when they took on Red Warriors Manlalangit and Kenneth Cruz, 21-14, 21-10.
In his UAAP 79 debut, Michael Saragena succumbed to the older AJ David in the last singles match of the game. Both players were in heated runs until the end with five deuces until David took the first set, 24-26. Saragena’s jitters got the best of him in the second set with David taking advantage and eventually taking the game for UE, 15-21
Lady Shuttlers standing strong
The Lady Shuttlers extended their winning streak at the expense of the winless Lady Warriors as the Green and White team clobbered the Recto-based squad in a sweep, 5-0.
Sophomore Iyah Sevilla paraded first for the Lady Shuttlers as she dominated against UE’s Heide Rosal in straight sets, 21-11, 21-8.
Arianne Rivera displayed her veteran prowess in her matchup against Lady Warrior Lyra Rosal. Most of the Recto-based Shuttler’s points came off of Rivera’s unforced errors for the latter to set up a commanding straight-set win, 21-8, 21-10.
Meanwhile, the national team tandem of Kristelle Salatan and Aires Montilla made quick work of Eryka Labay and Pamela Hernandez. The Recto duo could not stop the quick plays of Montilla and the power hits of Salatan for DLSU to get to triumph over them, 21-11, 21-7.
Sevilla paired up once again with veteran Isay Leonardo as they faced UE’s Rosal sisters. Although the Sevilla-Leonardo tandem spewed a few erratic plays in the first set, they eventually got their momentum to gain the first set advantage, 21-15. The Taft duo entered the second set with more determination, which spelled a big difference as they took charge and left UE blank, 21-12.
In the last singles match of the game, a familiar face bannered the Lady Shuttlers as Camille Gotohio took on Lady Warrior Labay. Although Gotohio led in the earlier frames of the first set, her UAAP 79 debut pressure got to her nerves, as Labay was able to emerge and eventually took the set from Gotohio, 22-20. The Taft mainstay was able to bounce back in the next few sets with Gotohio taking advantage of the fatigue-ridden Labay, 21-12, 21-11.
With both teams adding to their win columns, coach Lopez could not help but feel happy for what his team has done so far. “Alam ko namang gingagawa nila yung best nila para manalo yung team. I hope magtuloy-tuloy pa,” said Lopez.
Next up for the Green and Lady Shuttlers are the Adamson Soaring Falcons this October 1, Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Court. The Green Shuttlers start their matches at 8AM while the Lady Shuttlers suit up at 1PM.
