GH Republic dismantles Kalsonics to bag 2015-2016 LSAL Championship
As the most awaited basketball league in DLSU comes to a close, the GH Republic team cemented the La Salle Athletic League (LSAL) championship, as they blew out Kalsonics, 75-47, held at the Razon Sports Complex on Thursday, March 17, 2016.
From the get go, GH Republic poured it on behind high-fueled offense, while limiting Kalsonics to seven points in the first quarter. The “Green Hills” crew never looked back as they dominated wire-to-wire for the entire 40 minutes.
Martin Reyes paced all scorers with 22 points, while his teammates Jio Henares and Ronald Galang added 13 and 12 respectively. Enzo Manzano had 20 markers for the bridesmaid finishers.
Reyes gave a lot of credit to his teammates, as he ended up being the Finals MVP. “My play was because of my teammates. We played together, stuck to the game plan and played good defense.” He added that their championship was aided with good team chemistry as players of the team were familiar with each other back in high school at La Salle Green Hills.
The league opened last November 6, 2015, wherein 76 hopeful teams went tooth-and-nail to play grind out basketball en route to the finale. The teams were separated into eight groups, with the top four of each bracket will advancing to the semis.
The playoff picture became a single-round knockout elimination type until it yielded Kalsonics and GH Republic in the finale. The two teams entered the single-game championship unbeaten in nine games, while both eliminating last season’s finalists Buckets and Opayi.
For the outgoing LSAL Commissioner Vic Sebastian, the four-month league was a success due to the increase in level of competition and innovation during games.
“Solid kasi natapos namin from start to finish. Yun talaga yung goal and increase namin yung level of competition, malaking help dun yung alumni na din. Okay din yung innovation kasi yung scoreboard and stats kahit undermanned kami (people behind LSAL)”.
He added that despite this blowout championship game, his most memorable part of the tournament in his last year as the commissioner was back in the final four games between Buckets and Kalsonics. Eduard Bascon of Kalsonics heaved a shot from beyond half court at the buzzer to eliminate Buckets.
“Nag-last shot si Bascon from Kalsonics. Walang tatalo dun. 64-all tied, tapos 2.8 seconds. Nagwala kaming lahat,” he added.
For his last hurrrah, the 2015-2016 LSAL Season is a stepping stone for the years to come. Sebastian closed out, “We’ll address consultations for improvements in the future. Try namin na gandahan pa yung environment ng LSAL, mas maraming manuod at mas maganda yung mga games”.
