Green Archer on the rise: Andrei Caracut

Filling the void, providing something necessary. The De La Salle Green Archers opened their UAAP Season 78 campaign last Sunday with a much-needed backcourt depth since Almond Vosotros’ departure. Rookie guard Andrei Caracut is ready to prove that he has big potential this coming Season.
The DLSU Green Archers came up short in their FilOil Flying V Pre-season Cup campaign with a loss to San Beda. However, prized rookie Andrei Caracut was named one of the players to receive the Mythical Five award.
When asked about his transition from high school to college, “Mahirap yung adjustment from high school to college. Pero after four months of training dito sa La Salle, na adopt ko na kung paano yung laro sa college level kaya mas madali na sakin ngayon.” Says Andrei.
He credits the La Salle coaching staff for their help when it came to adapting to the college level, “yung mga mismatches tinuturo ng mga coaches pati yung pag-improve physically and mentally.”
The journey of a rookie may be too much pressure to handle but not to Andrei.
Being a rookie in the UAAP can be pretty tough. There can be too much expectations from your family, friends, the team, and the fans. “Di mawawala yung pressure pero sakin naman, prepared ako para sa UAAP crowd. Wala naman ako sigurong kailangan ika-pressure. Di ko pinapansin yung mga nag-eexpect sakin”.
“Basta ako ibibigay ko yung 100% ko sa game. Magpapakamatay talaga ako para sa bola kasi gusto ko manalo para ma-experience ko yung championship sa UAAP,” he shared. “Marami nga nagsasabi sakin ng pressure pero ready naman ako.”
Pressure is defined as a perceived expectation of the need to perform well under challenging situations. Pressure comes in different forms such as fear of failure or fear of living up to the expectations. We were all born to make mistakes, not to fake perfection; and this kid shows his maturity by shoving off the pressure on his shoulders.
Come UAAP time, there is no other much awaited match up than La Salle vs Ateneo. “Ateneo-La Salle talaga yung inaabangan kong match up”.
The Taft-based squad faces the defending champions National University Bulldogs for their first game of the season. “Summer pa lang nagpeprepare na kami. Hindi lang sa NU pero pati sa lahat. May [film] viewing kami lagi”.
Preparing for the UAAP is no walk in the park. As a player, you do not want to go into the biggest college league in the country without working on your game. “[I try to] keep my shooting consistent. Pati yung decision making ko. Mayroon din akong moves ngayon na di ko ginawa sa FilOil”.
Role model, someone a person looks up to as an example. In any sport, as a rookie, the veterans are good examples of what you should be. Some veterans in the Green Archer roster are Jeron Teng, Thomas Torres and Jason Perkins. When asked about those who mentor him, “si Thomas Torres pati si Jeron, vocal sila kung saan yung mga kulang namin. Tinatama rin nila yung mga mali naming kaya na-appreciate ko talaga sila.”
When asked about his favorite NBA and PBA player, “yung idol ko talaga is Steph Curry. Sa PBA naman ngayon, si Terrence Romeo.” Having one of the best handlers in the game as his idol truly make up his style of play. We can not wait on what kind of flashy plays Andrei is up to for the UAAP.
Goals and expectations
As a player, you have to set your goals in order to achieve the best performance. The goal-setting helps athletes know where they currently are and also where they want to go. “Yung ultimate goal talaga is to win a championship”. Andrei seems to know where they currently are and where they want to be. “Di ko pa masasabi yan [championship chances], focus muna one game at a time. Mahirap kung iniisip mo na yung long term, yung champion agad.”
When asked about being ready and his expectations, Andrei confidently answered “Alam ko ready na ko. Confident naman ako. Mas maraming fans kaysa sa juniors, bigger crowd talaga. Pero ready talaga ako”.
