The Green Archers notched their seventh consecutive win after dominating the UP Fighting Maroons, 86-65, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, August 23.
Almond Vosotros led all scorers with 21 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists while Jeron Teng garnered 15 markers and 6 rebounds.
UP’s JR Gallarza and Mikee Reyes paced the Fighting Maroons with 18 and 14 points, respectively. With the victory, the defending champions are now tied at 7-2 for the top seed with the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the FEU Tamaraws.
“Aside from the lack of focus at the start, the team’s energy level was really down. Some players didn’t know what the game plan was, defensively. It’s also something we need to learn,” La Salle head coach Juno Sauler commented briefly about his team’s performance in the first half.
The Green Archers underwent a slow start throughout the first half of the ballgame as UP continuously kept pace through excellent perimeter shooting and good defense to prevent a repeat of their last round’s horrendous start against the Taft-based squad. Although Vosotros regained his offensive rhythm from beyond the arc to make sure that the Archers stayed ahead of their opponents. On the other side, UP relied on the phenomenal sniping of Gallarza to prevent La Salle from pulling away any further and maintain only a 40-34 deficit at the halftime break.
Everything went DLSU’s way in the second half as the Green Archers regained their momentum to dictate the tempo of the game for good.
With UP plagued by foul trouble and unable to sustain their offense, the Archers blew the contest wide open at 68-53 courtesy of consistent free throw shooting from Jeron Teng, Abu Tratter and the returning Arnold van Opstal.
With Van Opstal finally back in the ballgame after a three-week absence due to nursing a knee injury, the Archers dominated the paint with ease to eventually take a 72-57 lead in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Green Archers showed no signs of losing steam, capitalizing on good defense and mounted a series of fastbreak runs to prevent UP from putting any more easy baskets.
With the Fighting Maroons unable to break the dry spell in their offense, Van Opstal and the returning Yutien Andrada put the icing on the cake in favor of La Salle after converting easy lay-ups to take a commanding 86-63 lead in the final canto. UP’s Mikee Reyes then drew a foul from Terence Mustre to sink the last two free throws but to no avail.
Up next for the Green Archers is an anticipated rematch with the surging FEU Tamaraws at the Mall of Asia Arena on August 27 at 4 pm.
