Green Archers destroy winless Growling Tigers

The De La Salle University Green Archers secured a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four with a convincing win over the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers, 94-59, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Growling Tigers showed promise at the start of the game, drawing first blood and keeping up with the running game of the Green Archers. The Taft-based squad, however, were determined to take the lead and finished the first quarter with a four-point lead, 20-16.

Mayhem went full throttle in the second quarter as the Archers, led by Ricci Rivero and Ben Mbala, outscored UST, 25-8. Andrei Caracut ended the first half with a booming three pointer to extend DLSU’s lead to almost double the Tigers’ score, 45-24.

The Green and White continued their dominance through the third quarter, kicked off by a dunk from Santi Santillan. The lead grew to 30 after Aljun Melecio hit jumper from downtown. The third quarter closed with a 34-point lead for the defending champions, 77-41.

The Green Archers didn’t let up in the fourth despite the gap they have over the Black and Gold as they even doubled the latter’s score halfway through the final quarter at 82-41. DLSU was not able to hold the 40-point lead but ended the game up by 35.
