Green Archers survive late Tamaraw scare
Mayhem continues as DLSU proved that they are still the team to beat, downing FEU, 95-90 Sunday at the MOA Arena in their opening game of the UAAP Season 80.
The Taft Squad showed that they were still dominant as they finished the first quarter leading routed the Tamaraws by double digits at the end of the first, 29-11. The hosts tried to rally in the second quarter cutting the lead down to 11 but were shot down by Aljun Melecio and Prince Rivero scoring from everywhere. The first half ended with DLSU keeping the lead in double figures, 47-32.
Mayhem persisted in the third as the Green Archers continued their hot shooting and persistent rebounding at the start of the second half and kept up their performance, going to the fourth with a 19-point lead, 73-54. The Green and White, however, broke down in the fourth as FEU rained threes and cut the lead to a single digit but DLSU was able to hold it off in the dying seconds of the game.
Pressed about how the Tamaraws were able to catch up in the last minutes of the the game, Coach Aldin Ayo said, “We’re a young team. Medyo may mga lapses pa sa decision making. Pero I’m sure they will learn from it.”
UAAP Season 79 Rookie of the Year Aljun Melecio steered the Archers with 29 points along with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Abu Tratter, filling in the starting role of center for Ben Mbala, tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds along with an assist and a block.
Ron Dennison spearheaded the Tams scoring 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Big man Prince Orizu stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block.
