Green Shuttlers falter to Fighting Maroons, 1-4

The Green Shuttlers fought with a gallant effort in a highly-contested match against the University of the Philippines but failed to register a win on the second day of the UAAP Season 79 Badminton Tournament held at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

First Singles Match

Green Shuttler Anton Cayanan had a hard time finding his groove as UP’s Joseph Lopez scored the first three consecutive points of the opening set. However, Cayanan immediately adjusted to his opponent causing him to tie the set at 13-all. Lopez had no answer to Cayanan’s attacks as the Green Shuttler was able to pull off a 6-0 run. With the momentum on Cayanan, he capitalized on the errors of his opponent as he grabbed the opening set, 21-17.

It was a different scenario in the second set as bot of the players tried to outsmart each other with hard smashes and well-placed shots but UP’s Lopez was able to pull away as Cayanan committed back-to-back errors in the last frame of the second set, 18-21

In the deciding set, Lopez started strong by having a 5-point lead by his side in the early part of the game. However, Cayanan took advantage of the Lopez’s errors and was set ablaze as he pulled a 6-0 run with his sideline smashes. It was through the Green Shuttlers composure that made him win the opening match, 21-19.

Second Singles Match

Team Captain Kenneth Monterubio was placed in an odd situation as UP’s John Bernardo lead the first set with the score 1-7. However, the Green Shuttlers’ Captain just analyzed his UP counterpart and made a scoring blitz causing him to lead the match with the score 9-7. The first set was a competitive battle for both players as it went to an extended set. The Taft-based player tried to salvage a point but the Fighting Maroon’s drop shot and Monterubio’s error on the last part costed him the set, 20-22.

Green Shuttler Monterubio was determined to win the second set as he lead by as much as four points On the other hand, Bernardo did not want to lose the fight as he managed to tie the set at 13-all. Monterubio was able to run away with the set as he made a 4-0 scoring run, 21-17.

The third set was a battle of might and grit as both players exchanged hard smashes. Monterubio was able to tie the set at 13-all after trailing by two points. However, the Green-and-White captain’s error production did not help his cause as he handed the final set to his opponent, 16-21.

First Doubles Match

The Green Shuttler-duo of Anton Cayanan and Cayel Pajarillo went up against UP’s Joaquin Deato and Vincent Manuel. The Taft-based duo struggled in the first set as they committed a lot of unforced errors to the delight of the Fighting Maroons. The Green Shuttlers were able to improve their play in the second set as they only trailed by two against the UP duo. The Fighting Maroons proved to be too much for the Green-and-White as Deato and Manuel swept the match, 14-21 and 17-21.

Second Doubles Match

Green Shuttlers’ Monterubio brothers, Kenneth and Joshua, faced their assignment of the day in UP’s Roberto Pineda and Ethan Malelang. The Monterubio duo was down by as twelve points in the early part of the set. As they gained their momentum, the Green-and-White was able to force a deadlock at 18-all. The duo of Malelang and Pineda tried to score a point but failed as they committed error after error eventually handing the set to the Green Shuttlers, 21-19.

In the second set, the Diliman duo breezed through the game as the Monterubio brothers committed numerous unforced errors in the middle frame of the set. A smash from the Fighting Maroons then sealed the second set with the score of 14-21.

The Taft duo was determined to win the deciding set against their UP counterparts as they unleashed hard smashes one after another leaving the Malelang-Pineda duo puzzled. However, the UP duo rallied five straight points which four of them came from the errors of the Green Shuttlers at 18-all. The Monterubio brothers tried to recover but the Diliman duo heated up taking the set, 19-21.

Final Singles Match

In the first set, Green Shuttler Jerickson Obaob and Fighting Maroon Carl Clemente were as if playing a game of tug-of war as they battled the set with an answer to each other’s attacks. Both parties managed to force numerous deadlocks but a smash from the UP side and an error from the Taft player ended the set at 19-21.

The second set was puzzling for the DLSU’s Obaob as Clemente was determined to win the match. The Diliman player got a hold on an early lead and displayed his variety of attacks. Green Shuttler Obaob then yields to his UP counterpart at 15-21.

The Green Shuttlers will try to look for win number two as they battle it out with defending champions National University on September 21 at the same venue.
