La Salle sweeps NU, sets up finals showdown vs FEU
10th straight finals for the Green and White!
The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers advanced to the final dance after blanking the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs, 27-25, 25-22, 25-11, in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 80 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Sunday.
Graduating senior Kianna Dy topped the scoring for DLSU with 17 points, 15 coming from attacks. Tin Tiamzon added 11 points, while Majoy Baron and Desiree Cheng chipped in nine and eight markers, respectively. Defensive ace Dawn Macandili tallied 23 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.
The Green and White fired 11 service aces compared to only two from their foes.
La Salle trailed early in the first set as National kept them at bay 12-8. Dy answered the call and delivered the goods to help DLSU stay afloat. Both teams went tit-for-tat later in the set but it was the Taft squad who came out on top with vets Baron and Cheng putting the exclamation point.
The Lady Spikers had a much better start in the second set as they rained down aces to lead NU, 8-5. The Lady Bulldogs, though, did not let go. Jasmine Nabor went for a 1-2 play to cut La Salle’s lead down to one, 20-19. DLSU created enough separation and a kill block from Tiamzon sealed the deal for the second frame victory.
Coach Ramil De Jesus’ crew dominated the third set, jumping to a commanding 11-3 edge. The lead was too huge to overcome for National U as they could not make a comeback. La Salle continued to pound on the Lady Bulldogs to eventually roll to the finale.
Santiago, who played her last year for NU, was the lone bright spot for the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points. Nabor had eight points, but only posted 17 excellent sets, six less than her DLSU counterpart.
Game 1 of the best-of-three UAAP Women’s Volleyball Finals will begin on Saturday, April 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Spikers and the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws meet again after nine years. This season brings a classic match-up and it is expected to be a slugfest!
