Lady Archers escape Adamson via overtime win
Despite scoring only two points in the second quarter, the Lady Archers squeak out with a narrow 45-42 win over the Adamson Soaring Lady Falcons last July 11 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University.
Cass Santos led La Salle with eight points and 12 rebounds while Ara Abaca had seven points, 17 rebounds and four assists.
On the other hand, Analie Tiongco led Adamson with 13 points and three assists while Janille De Castro had nine points and 19 boards.
“We settled too much for the lower percentage shots but at the end of the day, what held the game for us was our defense and that’s always been our staple. For us to be able to go to the next level, I think we have to work on our offense more,” said head coach Tyrone Bautista after the game.
Entering into the extra period, the Lady Archers continued to struggle to put points up in the board.
Sensing the urgency to win the game, Trisha Piatos banked in a crucial outside shot leading to a 40-37 lead but Taller would answer back with a jumper of her own to trim the La Salle lead to 40-39.
With the Falcons making one last push, Camille Ramos came up big in crunch time after cashing in a jumper at the 2:34 mark and another killer layup with 14.6 seconds left in overtime. Abaca would put the icing on the cake after splitting her charities for a 45-43 lead.
After the game, Coach Bautista praised his team for their fight and never giving up despite their poor performance, saying, “That’s always been the character of this team, they just won’t give up.”
Entering into the fourth quarter facing a 20-23 deficit, the Lady Archers made the necessary baskets just in time to catch up in the game. Piatos’ triple along with some timely makes from Miller and Alyana Ong gave La Salle a slim 27-26 lead.
Adamson would then counter with an 8-2 run to bury La Salle with a 29-34 deficit at the 4:13 mark. With the game still within everyone’s reach, La Salle came back with 8 unanswered points which led to an all-37 knot to end the 4th quarter.
“Even though we were struggling so bad, they kept on playing. Luckily, we were able to have enough time to win the game,” added Bautista.
The Lady Archers will face the UP Fighting Lady Maroons this coming July 14, 12 noon, at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
