Lady Archers short in late comeback; UST force playoff match for fourth

The De La Salle University Lady Archers fell short on late comeback against the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigresses, 65 – 68, in the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Basketball Tournament, on Friday, November 16, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Archers went to their strength which is opening the first period strong. Binaohan started the game with a triple followed by a Casillo lay-up to lead, 5-0. The Tigresses made their mini-run to trail by 2, 7-5. La Salle was able to counter their mini-run from Veterans Castillo, Torres and Nunez with a 10-5 run to end the first period with La Salle ahead, 17-10.

Lady Tigresses opened the second frame with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 17 a-piece. The Taft-based squad struggled offensively throughout the second period scoring 11 points compared to the Tigresses with 21 points in the quarter alone. At the end of first half, UST ahead, 28-31.

Both squad were able to adjust on both ends as they tried to counter each run. Throughout the third frame, the Lady Archers and Lady Tigresses were exchanging baskets. However, the Tigresses were able to build a ten-point lead against the Lady Archers to end the third period, 44-54.

The Green-and-White showed their composure in the final frame. Trailing by as much as 11, The Lady Archers were more aggressive towards the basket and comeback with a 19 -12 run, mostly from the free-throw line, 63-66. With under two minutes to play, La Salle was able to draw a foul that sent Nunez to the Free-Throw line to cut the deficit by one, 65-66. However, La Salle was not able to close the game.

At the end of regulation, the University of Santo Tomas forced a playoff match against the De La Salle University for the last Semis ticket, 65-68.

Despite the loss, Ana Castillo led the Lady Archers with 16 points and 1 assists. Veterans Kath Nunez and Camille Claro scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, UST was led by Aurea Larosa with 25 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Veterans Malu Irebu and Reynalyn Ferrer combined for 21 points and 23 boards.

The Taft-based squad will battle against the same team, after the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigresses forced a playoff match for the last ticket in the Final four this UAAP Season. Expect the Green-and-White to bounce back, on Wednesday, November 21.
