Lady Archers surrender season’s campaign to the Lady Eagles
Truly, history repeats itself. For the second straight year, the Lady Archers, with a twice-to-beat advantage at second place after the elimination rounds, once again failed to book a ticket to the finals series. Last year, it was the Lady Tamaraws who booted out the Archers. This year, it was the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles who ousted them 62-50.
From the opening bell, the Lady Archers looked aggressive in getting the ball down in the paint as Peñarada completed a 3-point play from point-black range early in the period. The Archers also showed good defense and challenged the Lady Eagles’ every shot. However, Ateneo’s Jose was able to find her way through to score for her team. Consecutive turnovers became costly for La Salle as Lady Eagle Yam scored back-to-back baskets to extend the lead. Vergara then shot a jumper followed by a trey from Ong to cut Ateneo’s deficit 15-12 at the end of the first.
The Archers showed good spacing early in the second quarter, which allowed them to have a better offensive rhythm as they forced a deadlock early in the second period. Yam continued to attack but Vergara was able to counter with a shot from beyond the arc. Both teams then continued to exchange baskets but Ateneo went on a mini run fueled by Tomita to take back the lead, 26-24 at the half.
The Archers threw a full court press at the start of the second half to pressure Ateneo’s offense. This proved effective as Castillo shot a Trey followed by a jumper from Claro. Good ball movement by the Archers allowed Roxas to put in a layup off an assist as they take back the lead. Lady Eagles Tomita and Go refused to get left behind as they each scored baskets to cut the deficit to a single digit but Claro’s layup negated their efforts. Vergara then shot a three-pointer to extend the Archers’ lead but Go answered with a buzzer-beater trey to force a deadlock, 38-38.
The momentum stayed with Ateneo early in the last quarter as Jose put in back –to-back baskets to take the lead, forcing Coach Villanueva to call a time out. Claro scored a layup after the time-out but Yam completed an and-1 situation. Mythical-five awardee, Abaca, attempted to rally but Yam and Tomita continued to floor the hardcourt with their offensive attacks to extend the Katipunan-based squad’s lead to seven with two minutes left in the game. Missed attempts and turnovers plagued the Archers late in the quarter costing them their season as they fell behind the Lady Eagles, 62-50.
Camille Claro led the Archers with 13 points while graduating player, Aracelie Abaca put in 12 points and 9 rebounds. On the other hand, Hazelle Yam scored a total of 15 points for Ateneo.
It was a sad ending to what could have been a wonderful send off for the graduating players, team captain Alyanna Ong, multi-awarded player Ara Abaca, Fretzie Oyao and Ria Pineda. A championship would have been nice but sadly, it was not meant to be. Until next season, hope springs eternal.
ANIMO! La Salle!
