Lady Batters: Aiming for a top four finish this season
The Lady Batters look to improve their 6th place finish in last season’s UAAP games and is aiming for a top 4 finish.
Last year’s performance
The DLSU Lady Batters only finished 6th place in last year’s UAAP Season, but for Head Coach Alex Estipular it was still a good effort as he saw improvements on his team, “Last season namin, atleast good narin kasi yung team, atleast unlike before in 7 innings hindi sila umaabot ng 7 innings, 5 innings lang, so hanggang ganun lang sila. So yung naging development nila yung 7 innings, very close ang score unlike before marami ang nagiging puntos ng kalaban. So last year naging very close, 5-4, 3-2, then may mga tinalo pa kami”. Team captain Vanessa Barbon on the other hand acknowledges their flaws last season, “Kulang kami sa communication, kasi hindi kami masyadong nag-uusap, wala kaming magandang bonding sa labas tapos sa loob parang wala lang, naglalaro kami as individual player ganun. Last year, nagkulang kami sa infield namin. Okay naman sila kaya lang wala lang, kulang lang talaga communication nila. Kasi kunyari may play na hindi nila nakukuha”.
With coach Alex citing that they’ve improved a lot compared from the past years, he was contented with what they’ve achieved.
Team preparation for the UAAP
Although the team is a little behind when it comes to rectuitment ithe Lady Batters in improving in every aspect of their game. As what Coach Alex said, “We are more on batting, kasi yun yung key ng team eh, batting, maka score. Pero nakikita ko sa kanila ngayon, talagang in all departments nila, running, catching, throwing, lahat ano na nasa 70 percent na and how they play na, dito nalang (points heart). Kasi ano na eh, binigay na namin lahat eh, lahat nung program sa team ganun.”
“Preparation nila yung exposure as a team, nilalalabas ko sila out of Manila to play with the men’s team para yung team exposure nila, eh sa men’s team mas taas ang kalibre. So pagdating nila, siguro, hopefully, sana mas mataas yung ano nila.” Says coach Alex, “nasa 60-70 percent ready na nung October, November naman more on games na, dun na makikita ang skills nila, more tune up games. So pag nagtune up game we play against a very strong team so macocorrect, to check kung ano dapat, ano yung weakness, weakness ng bawat isa, dapat icorrect”.
Coach Alex is also thankful that for this year they have gotten more support from sponsors, team managers, and the alumni because for him this will really help boost their chances come UAAP.
Expectations and Goals for season 77
A brand new season is coming; Coach Alex cites his expectations and Goals for UAAP 77, “So this season, lalaban tong team. Medjo we’re trying to change the ranking kasi we are out of the top four. Main goal top four then we’ll try to make it our goal to play in the championship.”
Also citing that they have acquired a good pitcher from Bacolod, he is confident that their new pitcher could bring a good impact to the team both offensively and defensively as long as she will be supported by her teammates.
For captain Vanessa Barbon, “Para sa school, gagawin namin talaga lahat, tapos ngayon kahit hindi man kumbaga sa ibang team, hindi man ganun kalalaki katawan namin maaasahan ng school na mas lalaban kami kaysa dati.”
Start of new season
The DLSU Lady Batters will begin their UAAP season 77 campaign on January 21, 1pm, at the Rizal memorial field as they face the UP Lady Batters.
