Lady Shuttlers dominate; Green Shuttlers misfire
It was a match day of contrasting results for the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green and Lady Shuttlers as they took the floor against the badminton bets of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST), respectively, on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Center.
Green Shuttlers vs ADMU
The slate of badminton games began early in the morning with La Salle squaring off against Ateneo. Cayel Pajarillo was first to the floor for La Salle against Fides Bagasbas. Pajarillo absolutely dominated the first set, 21-10. Bagasbas, however, was left unfazed, as consecutive errors from Pajarillo in the end of a tightly contested set two cost La Salle, 18-21. Ateneo was eventually able to cap the comeback with a 21-9 domination in the clinching set. Fortunately for DLSU, they were able to bounce back in the second singles match between Andrew Pineda and Ateneo’s Carlo Remo. Albeit another heated match, Pineda was able to sweep his opponent, 21-14, 21-15.
Cayel Pajarillo and Bless Linaban took the floor for La Salle for the first doubles match, sharing the floor with Ateneo’s pairing of Chan and Bagasbas. The duo of Pajarillo and Linaban proved to be the better team as they were able to edge Ateneo in three sets. Despite trailing by 1-2 in the team scores, Ateneo was able to keep their composure in the second doubles, as another three-setter ended in naught this time for La Salle, with the Remo-Asuncion pairing proving to be lethal against DLSU’s Pineda-Malabanan.
DLSU’s fate came down to Louie Khairiral, as the third and final set saw him going up against Keoni Asuncion. Asuncion got the best of Khairiral, as the Atenean sniped the set, 21-8. Khairiral was determined to bounce back, but it was a little too late as Asuncion won the set 22-20, and eventually, the game for Ateneo.
Lady Shuttlers vs UST
The badminton matches went on in the afternoon, as the Lady Shuttler looked to redeem the incredibly close loss of the men’s team.
And redeem, they did. In domination fashion, no less.
Airah Ablo kicked off the Lady Shuttlers’ reign of terror that afternoon, as the star shuttler stepped up against UST’s Stephanie Mortera. The first set was La Salle badminton at its best, as Ablo absolutely crushed set one at 21-6. Ablo went on to sweep the opposition with a 21-12 second set en route to a 1-0 game lead for La Salle.
The doubles matches were no sweat for the Lady Shuttlers either, as they likewise swept their games. Spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Angelika Paz and Kanna Baba, they were able to edge UST’s Ann Pimentel and Mortera, 22-20, 21-14, 21-17.
Ultimately, it was all up to the final singles match of Kanna Baba to deliver the killing blow. Coming up against Daine Peña, Baba was able to exploit the defense on the way to another La Salle sweep, 21-9, 21-17.
DLSU’s Shuttlers are ready to get right back it on Thursday, October 4 as the Green and Lady Shuttlers face Adamson University and National University, respectively, at the same location.
