Lady Shuttlers shoot down Lady Eagles to start UAAP campaign

badminton 2The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Shuttlers overpower perennial rivals Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Lady Shuttlers ,4-1, to open the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Badminton tournament on a high note at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, earlier today.

“Yung (magiging) performance naman nila ngayong season is sobrang pinaghandaan, pinag-usapan namin kung sino yung lalaro, kung sino yung ila-line up namin.” marveled Head Coach Owen Lopez, “Ang kagandahan lang doon, binigyan ko sila ng freedom na mag-choose kung sino yung partner nila especially sa doubles, yun kasi yung pinakaimportante, so nagkataon lang na effective.” he added.

The match lasted for two hours and 42 minutes of play witnessed by crowds from different participating universities.

Nicole Albo clinched the victory for the Green and White as she shut down pesky Cassie Lim in three sets, 21-13, 16-21, 21-16 respectively.

In the doubles match, team captain Kristelle Salatan and Alyssa Leonardo swept the tandem of Bianca Carlos and Geva DeVera of the shuttlers from Katipunan.

The first set was a tight one as Salatan smashed the winning point for DLSU, 21-19. The second set was a walk in the park for La Salle, piercing in arrows after another, 21-13, that gave the Lady Shuttlers a 2-0 lead.

Rookie Mariyah Sevilla yielded to Bianca Carlos of Ateneo in two sets, 10-21 and 14-21, that made ADMU snatch their lone win in the match.

At the start of the contest in the singles, Arianne Rivera trounced past Trixie Malibiran in three sets. Ateneo took a huge blow as Malibiran suffered a knee injury early in the match but showed resilience as she hooked the first set, 21-10.

Rivera retaliated in the second set with a ,21-12, counter attack to even the standing at 1-1. Halfway through the third set, the battle was stopped due to the aching ankle of Malibiran with Rivera leading, 11-7.

The maiden doubles match-up was also cut off because of the injury of the shuttler from ADMU that resulted to a win for DLSU.

“Kami lang ang gusto lang namin sana is yung maging consistent sila, kase ayaw naman namin yung hanggang simula so gusto naming maging consistent sila from the start hanggang dulo.”, Coach Lopez said.

The DLSU Lady Shuttlers will go up against the National University tomorrow, 1pm at the same venue.'
