Lady Shuttlers succumb to pesky UP, 1-4
The De La Salle University Lady Shuttlers showed signs of brilliance against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons but failed to upset the defending champions on Day Two of the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Badminton Tournament.
First Singles Match
Lady Shuttler Isay Leonardo opened the first singles match against UP’s Gelita Castilo. Both players fought neck and neck as they showcased their dexterity throughout the first set but it was Castilo’s baseline shots that made her victorious in the first set, 18-21.
Leonardo tried to stay close in the second set with the score of 10-12 to her UP counterpart but Castilo was able to pull away with the set with her service aces and the Lady Shuttler’s errors, 12-21.
Second Singles Match
For the second outing, DLSU’s Arriane Rivera struggled against Malvinne Alcala of UP as she leads Rivera throughout the match. Rivera tried to make some mini-runs and counter her opponent’s attacks but the Diliman player saw the Lady Shuttler’s weakness as she swept the match, 11-21 and 11-21.
First Doubles Match
The Lady Shuttler duo of Isay Leonardo and Iyah Sevilla also found it hard in scoring a point against UP’s Gelita Castilo and last season’s Rookie of the Year Eleanor Inlayo. Despite Leonardo and Sevilla scoring closely in the early frames, their UP counterparts’ chemistry in the court made them win the match in straight sets, 12-21 and 12-21.
Second Doubles Match
It was a different doubles game between the La Salle duo of Kristelle Salatan and Aires Montilla and UP’s Alcala and Jessie Francisco as the match-up went to a decider.
The Lady Shuttlers had a strong start during the first set and continued to equalize for most parts of the set to the Alcala-Francisco duo but it was through UP’s better court movement that made them win the set, 17-21.
In the second set, Salatan and Montilla still started strong and lead the UP squad by five points. The Lady Shuttlers had the urgency to score a point and counter their opponent’s attacks immediately. Though the Lady Maroons were able to force a deadlock at 19-all, the Green-and-White was determined to take the match to a final set as they unleashed back-to-back smashes, 21-19.
During the tiebreaker set, the Taft duo trailed early in the set, 0-8. The Lady Maroons then displayed their attacking prowess from both sides of the court. The Salatan-Montilla duo had a couple of mini-runs but was not enough to propel them in winning the match as they conceded to the Diliman duo, 8-21.
Final Singles Match
For the last match-up of the day, Iyah Sevilla faced reigning Most Valuable Player Beatriz Bernardo. In the first set, the Lady Shuttler lead her opponent with her versatile attacking from crosscourt smashes to drop shots that left Bernardo dazed throughout the set, 21-15.
Sevilla was determined to win their last assignment of the day as she continued to lead UP’s Bernardo but the UP player suddenly sparked up and scored seven consecutive points that made her tie the set at 19-all. However, the Lady Shuttler was thirsty for a win and stayed composed as she was able to grab the match through her powerful smashes and caused an upset to the reigning MVP, 21-19.
