The De La Salle University Lady Spikers suffered another defeat in the hands of their perennial rivals Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in four sets, 25-12, 20-25, 21-25, 19-25, in the end of eliminations of the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, earlier today.
Last year’s Finals MVP Kim Kianna Dy top scored for DLSU with 15 points and five digs. Desiree Cheng posted 13 markers and 13 excellent receptions, while MaJoy Baron and Ernestine Tiamzon added 11 and 10, respectively.
DLSU’s 36 errors marred a dismal performance from the Lady Spikers, 12 more compared to Ateneo.
La Salle started out strong in the game. Cheng broke down the Ateneo wall to help DLSU build a seven-point lead. From then on, the Green side did not look back and stepped on the gas pedal to cruise to a 13-point first set victory.
However, the Taft spikers encountered mishaps in the last three sets as Ateneo continued to tweak with their lineup. Jules Samonte became a spark plug for the Katipunan-based squad and proved to be a thorn on De La Salle. The Lady Eagles countered back to take the second set and eventually snatched the third and fourth frames.
Bea De Leon and Michelle Morente tallied 14 points apiece, while rookie Jules Samonte chipped in 10 markers.
The Lady Spikers placed #2 with an 11-3 win-loss card and set a Final Four match-up with the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses. DLSU holds a twice-to-beat advantage over UST and the Game 1 will be held on Saturday, April 22, 4pm at the Mall of Asia Arena.
