Lady Spikers clipped by Lady Eagles in Finals Opener

The DLSU Lady Spikers fall to their archrivals in the first game of the finals series in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, 25-17, 23-25, 13-25, 20-25.

The Lady Spikers came off an 18-day break after their last elimination game against NU. This long lay-off was not evident enough during the first set of the match wherein they blasted a fiery start against Ateneo. DLSU built the largest lead of the set at 14-3 mostly from attacks of Ara Galang and Aby Marano as the team showed that rust wasn’t an issue at that point.

La Salle opened things up in the second set the same way they started the first as they entered the first technical timeout in front, 8-4. From that point on, their Katipunan-based counterparts started their aggressiveness and fought back to grab the lead at 12-11. The game would be tight from then on as both teams were even deadlocked at 20 apiece at one point. Crucial errors though, piled up for the Lady Spikers in the late part of the set that helped Ateneo tie the match at one set all.

The Lady Spikers’ reputation of bouncing back big from a lost set was clearly denied by Ateneo in the third canto. The Lady Eagles romped a juggernaut 21-10 set fuelled by consecutive attacks and unforced errors from the Lady Spikers. Attacks from Alyssa Valdez, Michelle Morente, and Amy Ahomiro spearheaded the third set rally for the Lady Eagles as they left the three-time defending champions stunned. With the Araneta Coliseum’s blue side in celebration, the Lady Eagles secured the third set 25-13.

Equipped with all the right kind of momentum, the Lady Eagles unleashed a furious start and erected a 19-11 lead in the fourth set. The Lady Spikers, known for their impeccable floor and net defense, seemed rattled as attacks from the Blue-and-White squad just continues to pile up. Ateneo began to capitalize on La Salle’s poor reception and was able to read the Lady Spiders’ play well as timely blocks denied a potential comeback by the highly-favored DLSU squad.

A late run by the Lady Spikers to pull within three points was not enough as the Lady Eagles successfully shut down the undefeated squad in the league to take game one.

It was a dominating game for Ateneo’s 7-woman roster the entire game led by Morente’s 17 points. Valdez and Ahomiro dropped in 16 apiece and Ella De Jesus chipped in 12.

Cyd Demecillo paced the Lady Spikers with 16 points. Galang and Marano added 13 and 10 markers, respectively.

ADMU edged La Salle with their 9-5 serving and 49-45 spikes. La Salle also committed more errors than Ateneo 26-22.

This victory of Ateneo over La Salle halted the 30-game winning run of the Lady Spikers dating back to Season 75. With this Lady Eagles’ triumph, they virtually cut the series to a best-of-three.

The last time the Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Spikers was back on Season 74 similarly during the first game of their virtual best-of-five affair wherein La Salle also came from a two-week rest.

Game 2 of the series will be on Saturday, 4pm at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
