The De La Salle University Lady Spikers earned back-to-back wins at the expense of University of the East Lady Warriors and Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles on Day Three of the UAAP Season 78 Beach Volleyball Tournament held at the SM Sands by the Bay.
Dominance throughout the match
Lady Spikers Cyd Demecillo and Kim Fajardo displayed utmost finesse in their first game against University of the East by demolishing them in straight sets, 21-10 and 21-9.
Demecillo and Fajardo started strong in the first set and kept their UE counterparts Angelica Dacaymat and Judith Abil puzzled. The Lady Spikers established a good connection between themselves wherein every attack they made converted into a point. The duo of Dacaymat and Abil wanted to solve the La Salle puzzle but the Taft-based squad was just too much for the Lady Warriors making them bow in the first set, 21-10.
During the second set, the momentum stayed with the Green-and-White in which the Lady Warriors tried haplessly to steal the set from the Lady Spikers. With no luck on the UE side, Demecillo and Fajardo took advantage of this scenario and pulled away by giving the Recto-based squad a couple of loaded and well-placed serves and sharp kills. The Lady Warriors then succumbed to the Lady Spikers ending the match with a score of 21-9 in the second set.
Reliving the rivalry
In their second game of the day, the Taft-based squad upset archrivals Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles by giving them their first loss of the season and denying them the chance of getting the elusive thrice-to-beat advantage in a three-set thriller, 12-21, 21-16 and 15-12.
In the first set, the Lady Spikers had a shaky start as Ateneo’s Bea Tan and Alyssa Valdez showed their attacking prowess from both sides of the net. Though the Green-and-White had a fair share of their attacks against Ateneo, it was through Tan’s strong court defense that made it hard for the Lady Spikers’ attacks to earn a point. The duo of Demecillo and Fajardo eventually handed the first set to Ateneo with the score of 12-21.
It was a different game play in the second set as the Lady Spikers showed might and grit against Ateneo. The Lady Spikers enjoyed a three-point lead in the beginning of the set as their power tips converted into a point. However, the Ateneo tandem made a 6-1 run as their attacks were unanswered by the La Salle defense. The Green-and-White on the other hand was the determined to take the second set and made a 5-1 run of their own. The Lady Spikers exhausted everything in their arsenal from cut shots to strong spikes and finally, forced the Katipunan-based squad to a deciding set and ending the second set with the score of 21-16.
During the third set, it was as if both teams were playing tug-of-war wherein they were trying to outsmart and outlast each other. Earlier in the set, Demecillo and Fajardo trailed by two because of a service error and an outside attack but the Taft duo was really focused to grab the match against their archrivals. The Lady Spikers tied the set at 12-all wherein they made a 3-1 run coming from a power tip, drop shot and net touch committed by Ateneo. The Green-and-White capitalized on the shift of momentum which eventually rattled the Ateneo offense committing an outside hit and thus arriving at match point. The Lady Spikers ended the match in a high note with a service ace, 15-12.
When asked about how the Taft-based squad managed to pull a come-from-behind win, Lady Spiker Cyd Demecillo said, “Kumapit lang talaga kami. Pag nag-error kami, bawi. As in every point nila, bawi kaagad kami. Hindi kami lalayo.”
The Lady Spikers are currently tied with UST in the fourth seed with a 3-2 win-loss slate. They will battle it out next against the National University Lady Bulldogs on Friday, October 16, 11:30 AM at the same venue.
