Lady Spikers secure semifinals berth in beach volleyball
The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers continue to dominate on their beach volleyball campaign after defeating the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons, 21-17, 21-14, on Friday at the Sands SM by the Bay.
The duo of Team captain Tin Tiamzon and Michelle Morente showed their composure and mental toughness under the scorching sun while being up against a tough as nails team like the Lady Maroons. “It was a good game, we kept our composure, even though may lapses, bumabawi naman”, said Tiamzon after about their mindset for the match.
The first set was won by the Lady Spikers with a respectable deficit 21-17. The second proved to be more exciting after The Lady Spikers looked like they are running away with the lead, 11-7; The Lady Maroons rallied their way, tying the game 11-all before the first time-out. But the Taft-based team kept their dominance and went away to capture the set and and the match, 21-14. “We went back to basics para, to make the game”, pointed out by the veteran Tiamzon on their attitude after the huddle to stop UP’s rally and eventually win the game.
With this win, the DLSU Lady Spikers captures 2nd place and a twice-to-beat-advantage and will face either NU, Ateneo or UP. “Magtiwala lang kami sa sarili, and i-execute lang yung mga trinaning namin”, said Morente after being asked on what can be one of their strategies entering the final stretch of the beach volleyball season.
The Season 81 beach volleyball semifinals begin tomorrow as the Lady Spikers will face either National University or the University of the Philippines on Saturday, October 6 at the Sands SM by the Bay
