Lady Spikers start title defense, outlast FEU in straight sets to open UAAP 79 campaign
The De La Salle University Lady Spikers began their back-to-back title bid against an in-tact FEU side that almost knocked them out last year. Today, the former had to slug out the victory as they beat the latter in three hard-earned sets, 29-27, 25-22, 25-23, in the first round of the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Sunday.
Albeit getting the win, team captain Kim Fajardo still sees room for improvement for her young crew.
“For me kulang pa eh. First game pa rin nung mga ibang bumalik and may mga rookies kame na ngayon lang din nakasali so siguro adjust pa. First game pa lang naman, mahaba pa. We’ll get there”, she said.
With last season’s veteran core out. It was Fajardo, together with Kim Dy, MaJoy Baron, Dawn Macandili, and the comebacking Desiree Cheng, who led a rebuilding DLSU team in their impressive win.
Baron topscored for the Lady Spikers with 15 points, three from the service line, and three blocks, while Kim Dy added 11 markers.
DLSU once again relied on their floor and net defense with Fajardo scattering their offense throughout the match.
Kim Dy daggered a point that made a bit of breathing room for La Salle in the third set, 23-22. La Salle, from then on, rattled FEU on offense capped off by two unforced errors to eventually win the game, 25-23.
The Lady Spikers showed a glimpse of their potential right from the get-go, but opening game day jitters were also evident. The Lady Tams pushed the former to a 29-27 and 25-23 tallies in the first two sets.
Bernadeth Pons posted 12 points while Jerrili Malabanan had seven for FEU who lost setter Gizelle Sy.
