Lady Spikers stun Lady Eagles in three-set sweep
After yielding the crown for the past two seasons to their perennial rivals, The De La Salle Lady Spikers redeemed themselves and sent the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles crashing back to earth in a straight-set shocker, 25-22, 25-14, 25-18, in a nerve-wracking collision in the first round of the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, earlier today.
Team Captain Kim Fajardo spearheaded the attack for La Salle with 13 points, seven coming from service aces. The league’s top setter did the damage for La Salle to help her squad put a blemish on an erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo squad.
“Sabi ko relax lang, kase pinakaano kasi dun yung first set eh, kaya pag nakuha mo yung first set medyo relax ka na in the following set”, Coach Ramil De Jesus said, “So ang maganda nakuha namin yung first set then ayun second set then tuloy-tuloy”, the many-time champion coach added.
DLSU started off with guns blazing as they pulled away early, 8-0, courtesy of their service aces and defensive prowess of Mary Joy Baron. The spikers from Taft never looked backed, with Tin Tiamzon scoring off the block to push the Green and White up, 18-7, in set two. La Salle eventually bagged the set with the score of 25-14.
Ateneo was not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Hard-hitting spiker Jhoanna Maraguinot carried the Lady Eagles to a ,10-7, edge early in the third frame.
However, the Lady Spikers gathered their bearings as Mika Reyes buried one in, giving Coach De Jesus’ crew a two point lead, 17-15, in the third set. Ateneo could not get back into their form, committing errors after another. Reyes unleashed a block party late in the game to zoom La Salle to victory, 25-18.
Alyssa Valdez was contained to just 11 points by the De La Salle defense who seemed to find ways on how to limit the Phenom’s scoring.
De La Salle University Lady Spikers improved to 5-1 win-loss record, still at second place, but snapped Ateneo’s (6-1) 24-game winning streak. Come and support the Lady Spikers as they face the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses to try and clinch the number one spot
in the tournament on Wednesday, March 2, 2pm at the Arena in San Juan.
