Lady Spikers supersede Lady Maroons in a four-set victory
Coming off from a convincing straight sets victory over the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws last Wednesday, the Lady Spikers looked to keep their winning streak alive as they battled it out with the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons. Today, the Taft-based squad notched their second victory in a row of this young season as they edged the Lady Fighting Maroons in a four-set victory.
From the opening serve, the Lady Spikers seemed aggressive as they continuously attacked the ball. However, the Lady Maroons were able to catch up as La Salle committed several errors resulting to UP’s Bersola eventually scoring to take the lead. Fortunately, La Salle regained their lead and went on a run as Cerveza continued to show prowess with several service aces. Rookie, Tin Tiamzon also showed her fighting spirit as she scored for the Green and White with powerful spikes. Multi awardee Ara Galang showed her true form as she powered through UP’s defense with her signature hits. La Salle eventually drew first blood, 25- 14 with 11 attacks, a block and four service aces.
The Spikers entered the second set with as much intensity as the first as they dominated the Diliman-based squad 8-2 just a few minutes into the second frame. The Lady Maroons tried to rally but senior player Galang together with first year player Tiamzon built a comfortable lead for La Salle as they continued their attacks. Galang then sealed the deal in the second frame as she went for the kill, 25-13.
The Lady Spikers entered the third set with a goal in mind: Finish the game. Senior player Cerveza delivered for La Salle as she scored the first few points of the Green and White. Unfortunately, the Lady Maroons had a different plea as they went on a run of their own to catch up. Fatigue seemed to set in for the Lady Spikers as they continuously committed errors that led to UP taking the lead. Fortunately for La Salle, Reyes made a hit to stop the bleeding but it was too little too late as the momentum has already swung to the other side, 25-19 at the end of the third.
The ladies from Taft showed more heart though as they hustled their way in the fourth set. Reyes consecutively outsmarted UP’s defense, putting the ball out of reach while also providing good defense for La Salle as she made it her goal to challenge every attack the Lady Maroons attempted. The ladies clad in Maroon also showed resilience as they went on a run of their own. Long rallies became a thing in the fourth canto that La Salle eventually won out 25-20.
Baron led the Lady Spikers with 17 points, while Galang added 13 points of her own. Rookie Tin Tiamzon also redeemed herself from last Wednesday’s game as she contributed 13 points to La Salle’s victory today. On the other hand, UP’s Molde led the Lady Maroons with 15 points.
Witness the Lady Spikers in their road to redemption as they face the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs on February 10, 4pm at the MOA Arena.
