The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Tennisters grabbed the top spot in the Women’s Division of the UAAP Season 81 Lawn Tennis Tournament last weekend, March 23 and 24, at the CSA Bulacan Tennis Courts.
Lady Tennisters vs UP
The Lady Tennisters improved to 5-1 after defeating the UP Fighting Lady Maroons last Saturday, 4-1.
Angel Santiago hit the right notes to start the day after sweeping Nica Alanis, 6-0, 6-1. This gave the Green and White a hot start that they are looking for.
In the first doubles of the game, the pair of team captain Jed Aquino and Arianne Nillasca thrashed UP’s Delrose Duran and Theresa Tan. They took the win in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Aubrey Calma emerged victorious over Willow Day, 6-0, 6-2, in the second singles match.
The duo Jenni Dizon and Kiezl Diaz squared up in a thrilling battle against Danielle Carranza and Dana Uy. Both sets went the distance, 7-6, but La Salle hung on to win the match.
UP did not leave without a win as Khim Iglupas swept La Salle’s Akiko De Guzman, 7-5, 6-2.
Lady Tennisters vs UST
The Lady Tennisters, last season’s bronze medalists, made official their entry to the grand stage following a 4-1 victory over the UST Golden Tigresses the following day.
La Salle claimed all the singles matches of the game as Calma, De Guzman, and Santiago each picked up wins over their opponents.
Calma notched a sweep over Loraine Barola in the first singles match, 6-2, 6-4. In the second singles, De Guzman also made quick work of Erica Manduriao, 6-4, 6-0. UST’s Merry Rose San Jose, however, pushed Santiago to the limit as they faced off in a three-setter. Santiago would not be denied though as she prevailed, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
The Lady Tennisters split their doubles assignments as Dizon and Diaz lost the first doubles match to Ingrid Gonzales and Shy May Gitalan. The España-based duo took it in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Aquino and Nillasca, on the other hand, pummeled Mean San Jose and Angela Mosqueda, 6-4, 6-2.
The DLSU Lady Tennisters (6-1) will round up the eliminations on Sunday, March 31, 11 AM. They will face second-seeded NU Bulldogs (4-3) with a chance to sweep Round 2.
