Back-to-back champions!

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers swept their perennial rivals Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles in the Finals of the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Volleyball Tournament to clinch their 10th championship crown and to give Team Captain Kim Fajardo an exit she deserves.

The Lady Spikers outlasted the Lady Eagles in five nerve-wracking sets, 19-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18, 15-10, in Game 2 of the best-of-three Finale at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Saturday.

Kim Dy spearheaded the attack for La Salle with 19 points, three off of blocks. Ernestine Tiamzon tallied 16 points, including three service aces and six excellent receptions, while Desiree Cheng and Season MVP MaJoy Baron added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.

Cheng also bagged the Finals MVP honors.

Just like in Game 1, La Salle once again yielded the first set as Ateneo went firing right out the gate.

DLSU countered back in set 2, pulling away early in the set with a run capped off by an ace from Baron, 13-3. ADMU only came to as close as eight points. La Salle’s defense devour a hit from Tolentino to keep the Lady Eagles down big, 21-11. An edge too huge for the Blue side to recover from

The early part of the third frame was neck-and-neck. Both teams got knotted up at 10-apiece. The Katipunan spikers unleashed a run and built a five-point lead, 21-16. Then, they eventually hooked the set to nail a 2 sets to 1 lead.

The Taft-based squad stepped on the gas pedal to force a fifth and deciding set, where fans saw Fajardo gathering her troops before the final period.

Asked what she told her teammates prior to that, Fajardo responded, “Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Sa atin ‘to, wala ng bibitaw'”.

Then at set 5, La Salle showed they really wanted the title. Dy hammered down a cross-court hit from the back row to bring her team up by six, 10-4. Ateneo still had something left in the tank as they rallied back to cut the lead to two. However, a Green side that has learned to relive their killer instinct cut off any sign of life from the Lady Spikers.

Michelle Morente had 16 points, two from blocks and had 15 excellent digs as well. Jhoana Maraguinot and Bea De Leon chipped in 14 points each.

We might have lost to Ateneo in the first two rounds, but we win when it counts! ANIMO LA SALLE!
