They exhausted all means necessary and gave it their all and it wasn’t enough.
Hoping to avenge their first round loss to the Ateneo Lady Eagles, the Lady Spikers came up short as they faltered against the defending champions in four sets, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, last Wednesday at the jampacked Mall of Asia Arena.
Ara Galang led the Lady Spikers with 20 points, 17 coming from attacks, and 8 digs whereas Mika Reyes dropped 8 points and 4 blocks.
For Ateneo, Alyssa Valdez splashed a game-high 29 points and 2 blocks whereas Bea De Leon dropped 11 points and 3 blocks.
“For me hindi naman nagtatapos ang season ngayon. Dapat may panibagong start sa amin for the stepladder semis. Doon na lang kami babawi,” said Lady Spikers team captain Galang.
The Lady Spikers, save for their lone win in the second set, had a hard time catching up with the defending champions all throughout the game.
Trailing 25-24, La Salle tried to their best to force a fifth set but Ateneo’s rookie Jho Maraguinot surprised everyone as she scored the game-winning spikes for the defending champions.
This loss lands the Lady Spikers at second place for the elimination round with their 12-2 record while the Lady Eagles completed a sweep of the elimination round with a clean 14-0 outing.
La Salle now awaits the final tally for the elimination round since there is a currently a four-way tie between UP, Adamson, UST and FEU in the battle for the last Final Four slot.
“Kailangan din namin mapatunayan kung ano yung ginawa nila sa amin last year,” Galang ended.
