Staying Alive: Green Archers display championship form en route to winner-take-all clash
From start to finish, the Green Archers smothered the FEU Tamaraws on the way to a crucial 94-73 victory at the Mall of Asia Arena earlier. The groundbreaking win against FEU keeps the championship defense bid alive whilst also setting up a titanic duel for a seat in the finals on Wednesday.
Jeron Teng led the way with 25 points and seven rebounds while Norbert Torres added 18 points and seven boards. In addition, Almond Vosotros chipped in 17 points and four assists.
For FEU, Mac Belo was the only bright spot as he scored a career-high 32 points while Mike Tolomia was limited to only 7 points.
“We’re just grateful for the opportunity to play and we’re blessed to have it,” shared a stoic Coach Juno Sauler after the game.
The way the Archers dictated the game was arguably as satisfying as the fashion show that a couple of Archers appeared in last week at the same building. The kings of UAAP basketball were determined not to be dethroned by a team they were yet to beat this season prior to this match.
With the help of Julian Sargent’s three triples in the first quarter, La Salle sprang to an early double-digit lead after the first ten minutes. The first quarter gap paved way for DLSU to operate comfortably but their cushioned advantage was not totally safe. Mac Belo single-handedly carried his team like he were the only healthy Tamaraw in the woods.
The huge 29-point third quarter performance of the Archers seemed to have iced the game but there were still opportunities presented to the Tamaraws that allowed them to see a chance to reduce the gap. Ill temper also prevented the second-seeded team from keeping pace with the mean Green Archers by giving away too much fouls of all kinds, enabling La Salle to capitalize from the stripe.
Moreover, things did look dark for FEU when La Salle continued to fire offensively into the fourth quarter. A Vosotros triple midway in the fourth launched a game-clinching run that involved nearly all players fielded by Sauler. The clinical performance had the spectators in green-and-white revel until the outcome of the game was officially sealed. In the midst of that fourth quarter stretch, FEU tried to reduce their deficit by sending the Archers to the freethrow line. Nonetheless, the Archers converted most of the charities while also controlling the FEU offense which made the green-and-gold efforts futile in the end.
The much-anticipated knockout match is scheduled on Wednesday, the first of October, 6:00 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets for that game and the NU-Ateneo rubber match also happening on the same venue and day (2:00 PM) will be sold separately.
