UAAP 79 Preview: Green Spikers look to stand ground on the sands

For the past few years, the De La Salle University Green Spikers have struggled to make a name out of themselves in the UAAP Beach Volleyball scene. Despite the hard efforts, the Taft-based squad could not seem to be at par with the competition’s stakes getting higher every year. Whatever it was that saw the dwindling performance of the Green Spikers on sand before, it is all in the past now and the trio of Cris Dumago, Wayne Marco and Levin Dimayuga vow to be back, stronger than ever in the UAAP Season 79 Beach Volleyball tournament.

Finding the right mix

In last year’s UAAP Beach Volleyball tournament, the team of Carlo Sendo, up-and-rising spiker Dumago and beach volleyball veteran Dimayuga fronted for the Green Spikers. Although it may seem that the trio would fare well given their credentials in the volleyball scene, the Green Spikers weren’t able to live up to the expectations with the team finishing with a measly 1-6 win-loss card to put them on 7th place behind the only team they were able to beat, UE. It was evident how the team bannered different combinations of players to solve their chemistry woes but the switching of spikers backfired against them, as each playing duo was not able to jell with each other to unleash offensive variations and strengthen floor defense.

Team chemistry has always been to blame for the Green Spikers’ unsuccessful campaign in beach volleyball. However, the current roster of Dumago, Marco and Dimayuga may be able to turn things around in this season’s beach tourney. “Mas matatag yung pag-uusap namin. Mas maganda yung bonding namin kasi magkakakilala kami,” claimed team captain Dumago. The Green Spikers see their familiarity with each other as an advantage for the team to spell improvements in this year’s tourney.

Although the team has only prepared for the tournament recently, the Green Spikers consider their experience and teamwork during indoor trainings as an advantage for their performance on sand. To add, the Green Spikers believe that they should toughen up and learn how to adjust with each other inside the court. “Yung communication sa court [kailangan ma-improve] kasi last time parang magulo yung communication namin,” said Dimayuga.

A familiar coach resurfacing

Chemistry aside, the Green Spikers also consider their new head coach an asset to their beach volleyball campaign. As the legendary coach, Ernesto “Nes” Pamilar has agreed to take on the rebuilding Green Spikers after years away from volleyball, the beach trio look up to him for guidance and discipline in the sand court.

“Mas binigyan niya ng pansin yung attitude namin towards the game,” said a grateful Dimayuga on Pamilar’s coaching style. The Green Spikers have undergone a rigorous conditioning program to prepare for the tournament thus far. Relatively, the coaching staff has contributed to the team chemistry of the Green Spikers for their beach volleyball campaign.

Indeed the Green Spikers plan to make a comeback in this year’s tournament. Expect a tougher and a more resilient team to don the colors of Green and White this weekend. The Green Spikers face FEU and UP in their opening matches, October 1 at the SM Sands by the Bay.

Lady Spikers trounce UST Tigresses

The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers were unfazed by unconditional weather as they shot daggers into the defending champions, University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Golden Tigesses, 19-21, 22-20, 16-14, in a three-set, heart-pumping collision of UAAP Season 78 Womens Beach Volleybal at Mall of Asia Sands by the Bay, October 17.

Cyd Demecillo sealed the deal for the Lady Spikers with a service ace, 16-14, entering the semi-finals with a five-two win-loss card.

“Nasa isip ko ay dapat ako mag-focus at kailangan ko gawin iyong tama,” Demecillo marveled after she was asked about her mindset before delivering the winning point.

Kim Fajardo sent the animo crowd off their seats as she set the equalizer for the Lady Spikers, 14-14, fuelling a 3-0 assault against Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera’s tandem.

Fajardo and Demecillo’s duo displayed unbeatable “puso” on a hard-fought second set against the Golden Tigresses capitalizing on their key combination plays to extend the match into a third and deciding set.

The Lady Spikers could have won the first set but the España-based squad responded well with their combination plays.

“Dapat kumapit lang. Okay lang na magkamali basta pagkatapos noon bumawi,” Demecillo said.

The DLSU Lady Spikers will face the Ateneo Lady Eagles in a virtual best-of-three series in the final four later today.

Lady Spikers take down Lady Bulldogs, extend streak to three

12080271_765162623612493_8220223916836827586_o

Coming from a win against arch rivals Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles and University of the East Lady Warriors, De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers turned back National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs in two straight sets, 26-24 and 21-13, to post their third consecutive victory in a titanic collision in the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Beach Volleyball at the SM Sands Mall of Asia earlier today.

The Green and White pair of Cyd Demecillo and Kim Fajardo outwitted the tandem of Jaja Santiago and Jasmine Nabor from NU in a match that lasted for only 38 minutes.

The first set was a nail-biter as the Lady Spikers trailed National U early after Demecillo committed an error to give the opponents a, 3-7, lead.

DLSU was still rattled midway through the set, giving up points on errors to yield a ,6-14, lead to the Lady Bulldogs. The Green and White then found their bearings as they took it one point at a time, Demecillo tied the game at 19-apiece.

The match went on tit for tat, with both schools exchanging blows. La Salle finally took the driver’s seat, 22-21, when Fajardo misdirected her attack. The Lady Spikers still could not get away because of errors, letting the game be tied anew at 23.

Demecillo had enough as she took it over the outstretched arms of  Santiago, while Fajardo scored another point to snatch the set from the Lady Bulldogs, 26-24.

The second set was a walk in the park for DLSU as Demecillo daggered a point to bring the Lady Spikers up by three, 6-3.

The Taft-based squad continued to pound NU in the second set. Fajardo connected with a service ace, 11-7, giving La Salle enough separation.

DLSU pulled away later on as Demecillo caught fire. She buried five straight points, two from service aces, that pushed their lead to eight, 16-8.

The Lady Bulldogs did not go down without a fight, with Nabor capping a 4-1 run, 17-12, to trim the deficit to five. However, the Lady Spikers retaliated as Demecillo once again was just too much for NU. She countered with an arrow after another to carry La Salle up, 19-12.

Fajardo spiked one in to put the icing on the cake, bagging the second set with the score of 21-13.

With the victory, Coach Ramil De Jesus’ crew climbed up the ladders, tying ADMU with a 4-2 slate. Next up for DLSU are University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses on Saturday, October 17 still at SM Sands Mall of Asia.

Green Spiker Carlo Sendo: Looking to establish mark in the volleyball field

12108304_765132700282152_7751622757925912047_n

Volleyball is one sport highlighted in the UAAP games and is played during the second half of the league. During the first part of the collegiate games, its outdoor counterpart or more commonly known as beach volleyball is also one event being looked upon by the lovers of the sport. This year, our Green Spikers features Carlo Sendo, who has waited for four years and is ready to show his talents in the sands.

Sendo is an ID 111 AB-OSDM student and expresses his excitement in the games.

Back in Season 77, the Green Spikers ended their Beach Volleyball games on a disappointing winless record. This time around, Carlo looks to help the team in making their push in the top of the standings and make noise in the beach volleyball scene.

“Aim namin umangat at hindi makasama sa bottom. Sabi nga nila, there’s no way but up. Medyo may pressure samin kasi kailangan talaga namin mag aim high. Sana maka final four.”

Despite having limited time in practicing the sport outdoor with his crew, Sendo mentioned that they maximize every minute during practices and states that his team has a great time chemistry-wise.

“Maganda yung chemistry. If nagttraining kami, kahit kunwari tatlong oras lang, sobrang sulit kasi marami kaming natututunan.” he says.

Sendo is also a training player for the Philippine SuperLiga team, Champion Infinity which added to his experience and love for playing the outdoor sport. In his first year playing in the UAAP, he adds his goal is to contribute all he’s got for the improvement of the Green Spikers.

He stresses “Expect niyo sakin na every game all-out. Siyempre first time ko, matagal ko ng gusto maglaro ng UAAP. Expect niyo din na if matalo, sobrang magiging tough at i-aim namin na makapunta sa championship pero goal muna is final four.”

The men’s volleyball scene is usually overshadowed by the Women’s division due to the latter’s more exposure in the media. However, this is not a factor for the fourth year(played 3 years in UAAP Athletics) as he feels that the Men’s games are slowly making it’s mark and at the end of the day, it’s still on how you play the game that matters.

12122562_765140523614703_1816522180606757721_n

“Kaming mga players naman focused kami sa laro, Kung may blessings man na dumating sa men’s volleyball, which is now nagbo-boom na paunti-unti, di kami magmamadali at walang inggit na makita para talaga sa development ng team”

As a new face in the La Salle team, the former Athletics and high school basketball varsity says that he wants to make good on all the chances given to him. Looking ahead, Sendo mentioned the importance of having a positive personality that can affect the team plays for better results. “Gusto ko maalala nila ako sa personality ko sa paglalaro. Nandun naman yung gusto namin mag-champion pero iba pa din yung maiiwan mong personality sa team. Maging inspiration sa iba” he closed out.

UAAP Season 77 Recap: DLSU Green and Lady Spikers (Beach Volleyball)

beach volley2

The Green and Lady Spikers split their outings in the UAAP Season 77 Beach Volleyball Tournament wherein the men’s team placed 8th but fought with gallant effort while its women counterparts displayed a stellar performance and placed 2nd in the tournament.

Gallant effort

In this UAAP season, the Green Spikers struggled in the beach volleyball tournament wherein they finished the tournament with a 0-7 win-loss slate.

Squads like Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of Santo Tomas (UST) and National University (NU) proved to be too much for the Green Spikers as they thumped the DLSU men’s team with the scores of 21-14, 21-18; 21-16, 21-8; and 21-19, 21-10, respectively.

Though the men’s team found it hard to win at least a game, they fought hard and even forced deciding sets in some of their matches.

Furthermore, the Green Spikers played with fighting spirit and showed signs of improvement as the season went on and will prepare to come back next season as a much stronger team.

beach vb

Stellar performance

The Lady Spikers improved its 4th place finish last year. They became stronger this UAAP Season 77 and bagged a Silver Medal finish for DLSU.

At the start of the tournament, the women’s team failed to seal a win in their first assignment against the UST Tigresses with a score of 18-21 and 13-21 in spite of UST being a rookie-laden team.

Despite its first game loss, the Lady Spikers defeated their remaining opponents finishing with a 6-1 Win-Loss record just behind UST’s unblemished record in the elimination round. The road was not easy for the squad as NU and FEU challenged them to three-set games with the Lady Spikers being victorious with the scores of 21-17, 20-22, 15-9; and 17-21, 21-19, 15-12, respectively.

The women’s team entered the stepladder finals series as the second-seeded team with a twice-to-beat advantage. They first faced Adamson in the semi-finals wherein they dominated the San Marcelino squad in straight sets, 21-11 and 21-14.

With this scenario, it was expected again to be a titanic clash between the top and second-seeded teams in the tournament. In Game One of the series, the Lady Spikers played with an unwavering spirit against UST but was not enough to propel them as they dropped the game with the score of 21-15 and 25-23.

It was in Game 2 of the Finals wherein the women’s team fought with utmost finesse and was successful in handing UST its first loss of the season, 16-21, 22-20, and 18-16.

During Game 3 of the Beach Volleyball Finals, the Espana-based squad then showed the Lady Spikers that it was also a powerhouse in Volleyball. The Taft-based squad succumbed to UST in straight sets with the score of 21-15, 21-11, finishing with the Silver this season.

BV 3

With the Lady Spikers finishing second place this, they will strengthen their arsenal as they vie for its first championship in Beach Volleyball next season.

The Green Spikers were paraded by rookie Levin Dimayuga, Mike Frey and Jopet Movido, while veterans Cyd Demecillo, Kim Fajardo and Ara Galang powered the Lady Spikers.

The beach volleyball tournament started on August 23, 2014 and was held at the University of the East – Caloocan Sand Courts. It was hosted by Adamson University.

Adri- playing alongside you for four years had been an honor. With your leadership I learned to look up to you, especially because you handled obstacles along your way so well. I hope you bring with you your attitude in your field of work and do everything you can to contribute to this country. Wish you nothing but the best. Love you!

Adri has been a really great teammate to me. She’s been my teammate for four years and I admire her for her strength and her never-give-up attitude. I also admire her for bouncing back strongly after she got ACL during my second year UAAP. She got injured during the second half of that season but when training started for next season, it was as if she never got ACL at all. I am thankful that I had Adri as a teammate. She helped me both on and off the field (especially during the time when i’d make takas and use her as an excuse). I wish her well in her post-college life and I know that she’ll be doing something exciting with it!

Sam Hain

DLSU Lady Booters

Adri is someone you go to if you want to hear the truth in its raw and unbiased form. She’ll tell you in an

objective way which I love her for. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and she gives you the best advice she can. People see her as a tough aggressive woman but she’s more than that. She has a soft, funny side. She is such an adventure junkie, who is always game but is also responsible. She’s one of the toughest girls I know on and off the pitch. (Literally, she can beat you up)

I will definitely miss the car rides with her after training and to elsewhere places we end up going to. I will miss the conversations we’d shared to each other. I will miss the inside jokes we’d crack out of nowhere because we either saw it in a tv series or a movie. And I will definitely miss us blasting the volume up in the car and just ripping our lungs out and belt to old songs like we’re in an arena.

I’m so proud of her and where she is now and will be in the future. I know even though we won’t see other as often as I hope, we’ll still be close as we are now. Another chapter has ended and a new is about to begin for her and I wish nothing but the best for her. Love you Adri!

First of all, congratulations on finally getting away from the clutches of Taft. It wasn’t easy balancing all the things you had to do but given your talents, I’m pretty sure that was not a problem for you.I would just like to thank you for being the kind of person one aspires to be. Congrats kuya Jai! All your hard work finally paid off! That just goes to show that your determination and your willingness relally helped you a lot in achieving many things. Lagi mo ngang sinasabi na you’re the “jack of all trades, master of none” pero for me, that isn’t really a bad thing. Being good in many things is a gift, baka di mo lang nakikita, but what really stands out it that you’re good at being a leader and kuya to us. You always have a way with words that can touch really touch people’s lives, especially ours, your teammates, and we thank you for that. I would like to thank you for being one of my best friends in the team (it’s okay kahit hindi mutual kasi andiyan si Amos. HAHAHAHA JOKE LANG). Continue being nice to people, except for Jerome and Butchie hihihi. Good luck sa corporate world! I hope magkita parin tayo. Friends forever!!!

To the woman who made my college life worthwhile and to the one who introduced me to Stargirl, sa wakas, graduate ka na. Booyaaaaah!

I’ll miss you. Andami nating firsts together. We conquered our fears together. We went head on sa mga games together and marami pang iba. Pero yun, congrats! I could never be more proud of what you have achieved, Ate Biya. Truly, you are one of the strongest, brightest and funniest people I know.

Remember our credo yo,

Not even a single letter.

(And don’t call your future boss ‘eyebrows’ ha)

Oh, and I’ll miss you.

What I mean is, congratulations on conquering the monster that is life in DLSU. More than that, I’d like to thank you for all the kindness, friendship, help, insanity, and (drunken events not to be mentioned that may or may not have happened or been enjoyed). All of us (in the team) know how your march as a student-athlete has advanced the development in many areas of your life, not just in academics and sports but also in character. As you finally take hold of the title, “DLSU Alumnus,” may all the things you’ve learned on and off the piste and inside and outside the walls of De La Salle finally come to sense. May you forever use the learnings instilled in you as weapons to battle the “real world challenges” that will be right there to continuously discourage you to excel even further.

You have been a great senior to all of us in the team (despite your annoying sense of humor) throughout your five years with us, and for that, we will always be grateful. Your journey as a Green Fencer may have come to an end, but you will forever be part of the DLSU Fencing Family that has been growing stronger and stronger through the efforts of seniors like you. Congratulations! We are all so proud of you.

<3,

Mika Castillo

DLSU Lady Fencers

Dan, it’s been 6 years, since we met. Tryout days mo pa lang sa DLSU. Nakita kitang nagrow at gumaling sa fencing ganun din sa academics but most all sa personality. You’re now a fine young man, and with that, congratulations and I’m proud of you.

Joshua Rodriguez

DLSU Green Fencer

Hey Dan!!! Happy Graduation!!! Congratulations to you for finishing this chapter of your life and starting another one kung saan ka man maeemploy. I know that you’d be able to get a hell of a job somewhere basta aim high lang kaya mo yan. And syempre palibre kapag nangyare yun. Anyways, super thankful ako sa lahat lahat like yung paghelp mo sa majors ko, pagsama sa inyu as 3rd wheel/anak niyu kunware, tambay wherever, eat out and so much more. Thank you talaga Dan! Wag ka iyak ah. On second thought, cry as much as you like cuz you’re finally done with college! BOOYEAH! I will soon catch up, konting tiis and pagpush lang malapit na din ako jan. Hahaha anyways, don’t miss us (mika and me) too much and pakabait ka. Gonna miss our driver, bully, joker, and most of all, my brother!!! Good luck and God bless you on your next journey in life!

Justine Lim

DLSU Lady Fencers

Congrats, Kuya dan! Your journey in La Salle is finally coming to an end! I bet you’re excited and sad at the same time as your graduation day draws near! lol pero congrats talaga because you’re finally done with your college life. You’re now gonna face a different kind of stress but I’m pretty sure that you’ll handle it well because it’s obvious naman that you’ve really grown into a fine, wise and sophisticated man. The Taft life really helped you be a better version of yourself. Also, I’d like to thank you for being a great kuya to us. May God shower you with grace and protection as you move on to the next chapter of your life. God bless and God speed.

Dan Rowell Rebuyas is an epitome of a true champion. Not only did he excel in fencing, but he also manages his time in academics and more “social gatherings”. There was never a dull “Dan” moment. When life hands him lemons, he’d probably say, “Where’s the tequila??” This guy tends to surprise himself when faced in a situation where his strengths and capabilities are tested. To all those who tried to question you, don’t mind them, you know you are better than them. You know you are better than that. When people are trying to take you down, it means you are above them. No matter how hard life hits you, hold your ground and stand up strong.

To more hugot conversations and random drinking sessions, cheers! You’re the man, Dan!

Dan the man! Kamusta corporate world? Yun lang see ya soon bro!

Hi Sam “ang small but terrible” ng DLSU Women’s Judo team. Sobrang nakakainspire ka sa lahat ng bagay. As a student and as an athlete kasi ang galing mo. Consistent first honor DL ka and at the same time ang laki ng inimprove mo sa judo. Idol kita kasi super sipag mo pang mag training and fast learner ka. Nakikita ko na pinagtitiyagaan mo lahat ng bagay lalo na kapag may hindi ka makuha na technique. Kahit late ka na nagstart, di ko na feel ngayon yoon. Thank you for inspiring everyone in the dojo. Na maging katulad mo na smart, strong, and hard working. Thank you sa lahat ng naishare mo sakin. Pursue your ambitions in life. God bless you Sam! Love you!!

Hi “kuya” Sam! Congratulations. I’m so proud of you because you are graduating with a tittle of summa cum laude, which is a mission impossible for an excellent athlete like you but you did it! Don’t stop working on your dreams and aiming for your goals. I love you Sam and thank you for all the things.

Angelica Recarro

DLSU Lady Judoka

Sam is one of the most, if not, the most hardworking student-athlete I have ever met. Being able to balance and excel in both academics and extra-curricular activities is no small feat. Not to mention that she will not only be graduating with the highest honor, but she is also a recipient of the Athletics Award and other academic awards. According to her, with all the achievements she received, she offers them back all to God.

As you enter a new chapter in your life, I hope you will inspire more people to serve God through your contributions in the society in whatever field or path you choose. Congratulations Sam! I am so proud of you!

Dear Twinkle, I am very thankful that I got to you know before you graduated. We met on your last term here at the University. During this short time, we endured a lot of things together as we hosted the UAAP Season 77 Athletics Competition. We shared a good laughs together during the hosting. Remember the time when I asked to seek help from the medal stewards and you said “mga babae yan”. Then I said “ikaw din naman”. You replied “babae sila”. I still find it very funny until now. Now that you have already graduated, I would like to wish you the best of luck in looking for a job. If you need help on anything, don’t hesitate to send me a text or message me in Facebook. Cum Laude, Athletics Award

Hard work at its finest, that’s Marcelle Josephine M. Galera. Emgee, as what we fondly call her, is a woman of empowerment, of goal and of great example. Being a consistent dean’s lister all throughout her college life, not to mention graduating as a Cum Laude, and at the same time contributing to 2 championship UAAP titles for the women’s table tennis team, she indeed embodies how it is to be a true La Sallian student-athlete. I, being her roommate for the past 4 years have quite known her and have seen how she is very thoughtful to the people she loves and values the most, especially her teammates and of course her dear family. She would do everything just to protect us, no matter what. That’s why it’s not a surprise that if one day, she’ll just come from nowhere and offer you a helping hand and a listening heart. I am really proud of her and of everything that she is achieving today which, she rightly deserves because she has the mind of intelligence, a heart of eagerness and of course a faith in God that no one can easily break.

Ian Lariba

DLSU Lady Paddlers

You might be thinking, who is this girl? This is Miss Josephine, an independent hard working girl that has always been there for her loved ones. She makes it a point that everyone she meets remembers her, with her smile and character. A constant Dean’s Lister and part time athlete, she shines above the rest, especially with a Cum Laude attached to her name that she deserves. Always ready to be a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on and a phone call away. Being her teammate for two years was definitely a big part of my stay in DLSU, and I am proud to be called her friend. When she forgets your name, she would always remember your face and call you “Bai”.

Mardeline Carreon

Ate mg, happy graduation! Super idol kita! You are one of those people that I look up to. Being a student-athlete isn’t easy, it takes a lot of perseverance and passion to be able to do it with flying colors. What’s even harder is to graduate with honors and you did it like a pro. You’ve been a teammate, a classmate, a friend and a sister to me and i thank you for everything especially for your advice and inspiring words. Good luck to your future endeavors. I will always pray for your success. Always remember that we are here for you! Love yaaaa!!!

Happy graduation day! Graduate ka na! So proud of you! Haha. You’re the best ate in town! Thank you for everthing!I love you!

To my dearest batch-mate, i cannot believe that you’re already graduating. Thank you for being an inspiration not only to me but also to the team. I always looked up to you because you’re thoughtful and self-inclined. Our extension towards the 5th year to be able to play in the UAAP was definitely worth it. I’m really glad that i was able to spend my 5 years with you. It was just like yesterday that we were talking about our dilemmas in school, training, and where we would end up after college. All i can say is that we’ve gone through a lot and we’ve grown to be better individuals. You’re one step away in the real world and i can see a really bright future ahead of you. Grit and Grind: Lady Spikers dice Tigresses to extend beach volley finals

IMG_3853

The Lady Spikers moved closer to their championship aspirations after nailing a tough win against the UST Tigresses, 16-21, 22-20, 18-16, during the second game of the UAAP Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship earlier at the UE Caloocan Sand Court.

“Babawi kami sa next games. Less errors and we will correct our mistakes na nagawa namin sa games today and sana makabawi naman and sana maging composed ulit kami ni Kim,” (We will bounce back in the next games. Less errors and we will correct the mistakes that we committed in today’s games and hopefully we’ll be able to bounce back. And I hope Kim and I will remain composed) says Cyd Demecillo.

UST took the first set of the second game easily 21-16 and looked like they were going to run away with the title but the Lady Spikers refused to give up and furiously won the next two sets, 22-20 and 18-16.

First game mishap

The Kim Fajardo and Cyd Demecillo tandem had a good start in the opening game of the finals but saw their early lead vanish and lost the first set to UST’s Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera 21-15.

In the second set, La Salle had a chance to tie the game at one set apiece but untimely errors prevented them from capturing the set. With that, UST capitalized on all the errors and miscues that DLSU committed leading them to nab the second set 25-23.

Inching closer to the crown

For the team to grind out another win, it will be their character and experience that would be the main factors in securing the crown.

“Character talaga. Alam namin na ahead kami sa experience. Dapat pagpasok pa lang ng court intimidated na yung kalaban kasi rookies palang sila so alam nila na mas experienced kami” (Character. We know that we are more experienced. The moment we step in the court they should be intimidated already since they are rookies and they know we are more experienced), Fajardo shares.

Game three of the finals between DLSU and UST will be played tomorrow, 9:30am at the UE-Caloocan sand court. If La Salle wins game three, a winner-takes-all-game will follow.

Lady Spikers dethrone Adamson, book finals showdown with UST

DSC_0806

The tandem of Kim Fajardo and Cyd Demecillo defeated the defending champions, Adamson’s Amanda Villanueva and Len Cortel, in straight sets with the score of 21-11, 21-14 to advance to the UAAP beach volleyball finals.

“Umabot na kami dito so bakit pa kami ngayon mag give up. Syempre we won’t give up” (We already made it here so why would we give up now. Of Course we won’t give” expressed Cyd Demecillo.

DLSU relied on their solid defense and smart attacks to outplay Adamson’s duo in a high-tempo duel.

The Lady Spikers will seek to break the invincibility of University of Santo Tomas on Saturday, September 6 still at the UE-Caloocan Sand Court. In the series, the Lasallians will try to erase UST’s thrice-to-beat advantage and win the UAAP Beach Volleyball crown for the first time.

The Lady Spikers finished the elimination round of the UAAP season 77 beach volleyball tournament in second place with a 6-1 win-loss card giving them a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals.

DLSU’s women’s beach volleyball team composed of Kim Fajardo, Cyd Demecillo and Ara Galang suffered a setback at the start of the tournament when they dropped their opening match against University of Santo Tomas’ Cherry Rondina, Rica Rivera and Bianca Cruz 18-21, 13-21. The loss, however, did not dampen the spirits of Kim, Cyd and Ara as they swept their remaining matches in elimination round.

DLSU’s coach Noel Orcullo is hoping that the strong performance of Kim and Cyd in the elimination round will continue in the semis “Sana magtuloy tuloy. Medyo mahirap yung format pero sana kayanin.” (I hope that it continues. The format is kind of difficult but I hope we make it).

The trio of UST was able to sweep the elimination round, giving them an outright finals berth which also means that the semifinals will not be the usual final four format but will instead be a stepladder format. The winner of the playoff game between defending champions Adamson, represented by Amanda Villanueva and Len Cortel, and Far Eastern University, bannered by Charm Simborio and Bernadeth Pons, will face a DLSU team with a twice-to-beat advantage. The winner between La Salle and either FEU or Adamson will go up against UST in the finals.

Coach Noel feels that it will be important for his team to be able to maximize the advantage that they gained in the elimination round by advancing to the finals right away. “Since naging stepladder yung format dahil walang talo yung UST, I’m hoping na matalo na namin kaagad yung winner ng AdU -FEU game para finals na kaagad kami.” (Since it became a stepladder format because UST didn’t lose, I’m hoping that we can beat the winner of the AdU-FEU game so we can reach the finals right away).

When asked for his thoughts on UST having a huge thrice-to-beat advantage in the finals and his team’s chances of bagging their first ever beach volleyball crown, coach Noel acknowledged the difficulty of playing a renowned beach volleyball team such as UST, “syempre mahirap din kasi yung UST meron silang separate na team for beach and indoor volleyball. Tayo yung sa beach hugot lang sa indoor. Halos one week lang or one and a half weeks lang yung total practice time namin tapos yung UST nag training talaga ng matagal. Sana lang maka adjust talaga yung players. I’m hoping na sana makuha namin yung championship.” (Of course it will be hard because UST has a separate team for beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. For us, we only get our players from our indoor volleyball team. We only had about a week or a week and a half of total practice time then UST; they have been training for a long time. I’m just hoping that the players can adjust. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to get the championship).

The Lady Spikers return to UE Caloocan today, awaiting the winner of FEU and Adamson who will clash at 9:00 AM, before seeing action later in the day.

The Green Spikers ended their UAAP Season 77 beach volleyball tournament winless in seven games but demonstrated an unwavering spirit that almost earned them a win or two.

Bitten by the hounds

On Saturday, they took a tough blow from NU after losing in straight sets, 19-21, 10-21.

Levin Dimayuga and Jopet Movido were trailing in the beginning of the first set and was able to catch up by working on their setting and blocking but NU’s attacks proved to be stronger and was able to get the set, 19-21.

During the second set, it was the same story as NU dominated DLSU by getting the early lead. Though the Taft-based duo tried to cope with the intensity of NU. However, it grew tougher and after suffering from reception errors, it cost them the set, 10-21.

With this, their coach, Jose Roque, said that the team needed the heart to fight and added: “They need the will to win tsaka more experience and exposure will help them gain their confidence as well as techniques sa beach volley.”

In the end, the team is hoping to end this season with a win as they go up against University of the East, August 31 at 11:30am.

Came fighting ’till the end

UE outran La Salle in men’s beach volley in three sets, 19-21, 21-18, 11-15.

In the first set, the Green Spikers delivered good attacks but their unforced errors and UE’s backrow hits saw them grab the first set, 19-21.

During the second set, it was a different story as the Green Spikers improved their reception, blocking and registered excellent digs for them to stay alive to force the game into a deciding set following a 21-18 second set win.

However, in the third set, Dimayuga and Movido started slowly at 0-4. They were was able to catch up by delivering down the line hits to tie the score but UE adjusted as they continued to lead La Salle winning by 4 points, 11-15.
