Lady Archers end UAAP Season 81 campaign with fifth place finish

The De La Salle University Lady Archers succumbed to the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigresses in a do-or-die match battle for fourth ending their UAAP Season 81 Women’s Basketball campaign with fifth finish, 67-79, on Wednesday, November 21, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Archers started the opening quarter strong with an 11-0 run with Claro shooting three straight 3-pointers and a jump shot from Paraiso. MVP Grace Irebu opened the quarter for the UST Lady Tigresses. The Espana-based squad had a 11-4 counter-run to cut La Salle’s lead down to 4, 15-11. Veterans Castillo and Torres answered UST’s run both with a triple to end the first frame ahead, 21-17.

The Green-and-White struggled offensively and defensively in the second frame. La Salle scored 12 points against UST’s 21 points in the quarter alone. La Salle trail by 5, 33-38, at the end of first half.

The Taft-based squad and Espana-based squad were able to adjust to the play making of one another as La Salle and UST exchanged series of runs throughout the third frame. La Salle opened a 17– 6 to reclaim the lead, 50-44. UST had their own 10 – 0 run to end the third frame ahead, 50-54.

Lady Archers fought hard throughout the fourth and final frame of the game. The Lady Archers tried to make runs but fell short at the end of the final buzzer, scoring 17 points against UST’s 25 points in the quarter, 67-79.

At the end of regulation, The University of Santo Tomas secured fourth semis seat against the De La Salle University, 67-79.

Ana Castillo led the Lady Archers with 20 points and 4 assists while tandem Camille Claro and Marie Arciga scored 15 points and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Lady Tigresses was led by Season 81 Most Valuable Player Grace Irebu with 29 points and 14 boards. Veteran Capilit and Larosa combined for 34 points and 8 boards.

The Taft-based squad finished Season 81 with fifth finish with a win-loss record of 8-6.

Lady Archers short in late comeback; UST force playoff match for fourth

The De La Salle University Lady Archers fell short on late comeback against the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigresses, 65 – 68, in the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Basketball Tournament, on Friday, November 16, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Archers went to their strength which is opening the first period strong. Binaohan started the game with a triple followed by a Casillo lay-up to lead, 5-0. The Tigresses made their mini-run to trail by 2, 7-5. La Salle was able to counter their mini-run from Veterans Castillo, Torres and Nunez with a 10-5 run to end the first period with La Salle ahead, 17-10.

Lady Tigresses opened the second frame with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 17 a-piece. The Taft-based squad struggled offensively throughout the second period scoring 11 points compared to the Tigresses with 21 points in the quarter alone. At the end of first half, UST ahead, 28-31.

Both squad were able to adjust on both ends as they tried to counter each run. Throughout the third frame, the Lady Archers and Lady Tigresses were exchanging baskets. However, the Tigresses were able to build a ten-point lead against the Lady Archers to end the third period, 44-54.

The Green-and-White showed their composure in the final frame. Trailing by as much as 11, The Lady Archers were more aggressive towards the basket and comeback with a 19 -12 run, mostly from the free-throw line, 63-66. With under two minutes to play, La Salle was able to draw a foul that sent Nunez to the Free-Throw line to cut the deficit by one, 65-66. However, La Salle was not able to close the game.

At the end of regulation, the University of Santo Tomas forced a playoff match against the De La Salle University for the last Semis ticket, 65-68.

Despite the loss, Ana Castillo led the Lady Archers with 16 points and 1 assists. Veterans Kath Nunez and Camille Claro scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, UST was led by Aurea Larosa with 25 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Veterans Malu Irebu and Reynalyn Ferrer combined for 21 points and 23 boards.

The Taft-based squad will battle against the same team, after the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigresses forced a playoff match for the last ticket in the Final four this UAAP Season. Expect the Green-and-White to bounce back, on Wednesday, November 21.

Lady Archers triumph against UP, grab sixth win

The De La Salle University Lady Archers dominated the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 68-56, in the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Ynares Center, Antipolo on Saturday.

The Taft-based squad was able to bounce back after two consecutive defeats as they dominated the UP Lady Maroons.

The Lady Archers started the opening quarter strong with a 10-2 run that was not able to counter by the Lady Maroons. A collaborative effort on offense and defensive gave La Salle a 15-6 advantage heading into the second period.

The Green-and-White were able to capitalized UP’s struggle on offense and defense, leading with a 20-16, second quarter score. La Salle ahead by 13, 35-22, to end the 1st half.

The Taft-based squad and Diliman-based squad were able to adjust to the play making of one another as La Salle and UP exchanged baskets through out the 2nd half. The Lady Maroons tried to make runs but the strong first quarter run by the Lady Archers led them to their sixth win of the season.

Lady Archer Camille Claro led La Salle with 16 points while the tandem of Marie Arciga and Ana Castillo combined with 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and 3 assists, respectively.

The Lady Archers moved to 6-5, win-loss record and will try to grab its second straight victory against the Adamson Univerity Lady Falcons on November 7, Wednesday, 8AM at the Araneta Coliseum.
