UAAP Season 77 Recap: DLSU Green and Lady Spikers (Beach Volleyball)
The Green and Lady Spikers split their outings in the UAAP Season 77 Beach Volleyball Tournament wherein the men’s team placed 8th but fought with gallant effort while its women counterparts displayed a stellar performance and placed 2nd in the tournament.
In this UAAP season, the Green Spikers struggled in the beach volleyball tournament wherein they finished the tournament with a 0-7 win-loss slate.
Squads like Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of Santo Tomas (UST) and National University (NU) proved to be too much for the Green Spikers as they thumped the DLSU men’s team with the scores of 21-14, 21-18; 21-16, 21-8; and 21-19, 21-10, respectively.
Though the men’s team found it hard to win at least a game, they fought hard and even forced deciding sets in some of their matches.
Furthermore, the Green Spikers played with fighting spirit and showed signs of improvement as the season went on and will prepare to come back next season as a much stronger team.
The Lady Spikers improved its 4th place finish last year. They became stronger this UAAP Season 77 and bagged a Silver Medal finish for DLSU.
At the start of the tournament, the women’s team failed to seal a win in their first assignment against the UST Tigresses with a score of 18-21 and 13-21 in spite of UST being a rookie-laden team.
Despite its first game loss, the Lady Spikers defeated their remaining opponents finishing with a 6-1 Win-Loss record just behind UST’s unblemished record in the elimination round. The road was not easy for the squad as NU and FEU challenged them to three-set games with the Lady Spikers being victorious with the scores of 21-17, 20-22, 15-9; and 17-21, 21-19, 15-12, respectively.
The women’s team entered the stepladder finals series as the second-seeded team with a twice-to-beat advantage. They first faced Adamson in the semi-finals wherein they dominated the San Marcelino squad in straight sets, 21-11 and 21-14.
With this scenario, it was expected again to be a titanic clash between the top and second-seeded teams in the tournament. In Game One of the series, the Lady Spikers played with an unwavering spirit against UST but was not enough to propel them as they dropped the game with the score of 21-15 and 25-23.
It was in Game 2 of the Finals wherein the women’s team fought with utmost finesse and was successful in handing UST its first loss of the season, 16-21, 22-20, and 18-16.
During Game 3 of the Beach Volleyball Finals, the Espana-based squad then showed the Lady Spikers that it was also a powerhouse in Volleyball. The Taft-based squad succumbed to UST in straight sets with the score of 21-15, 21-11, finishing with the Silver this season.
With the Lady Spikers finishing second place this, they will strengthen their arsenal as they vie for its first championship in Beach Volleyball next season.
The Green Spikers were paraded by rookie Levin Dimayuga, Mike Frey and Jopet Movido, while veterans Cyd Demecillo, Kim Fajardo and Ara Galang powered the Lady Spikers.
The beach volleyball tournament started on August 23, 2014 and was held at the University of the East – Caloocan Sand Courts. It was hosted by Adamson University.
