Coming off another podium finish last year, the De La Salle University Lady Spikers are now slowly getting into tip-top shape to reclaim the coveted collegiate volleyball crown in the second half of the UAAP season. DLSU is set to parade a formidable team with Victonara Galang coming back from injury plus the addition of three new faces on their lineup. However, La Salle will miss the services of third-year player Desiree Cheng due to a knee injury that she suffered in an exhibition game last year in Misamis Occidental.

A mix of solid veterans and young guns are going to war to fulfill DLSU’s championship aspirations as they try to put an end to their title drought.
Asked about what they worked on in training to be more lethal against other teams, the Lady Spikers head coach, Ramil De Jesus, said that they focused on one thing for them to improve, “Yung offense, mas nagconcentrate kami kasi last year, nadominate kami ng ibang teams sa offense, so yun, nagconcentrate talaga kami this year sa offense.”
Some of De La Salle’s volleybelles namely Reyes, Baron, Dy, Cervesa, Demecillo, and Fajardo joined the Meralco Power Spikers, also in De Jesus’ tutelage in the Philippine Super Liga.
The spikers from Taft tried to gain as much experience and exposure as they can in the offseason to avoid rust due to long vacation.
The many-time champion coach marveled that the whole Lasallian community should expect a better and stronger DLSU Women’s volleyball team than last season, when the Green and White was hit with a series of injuries that left a huge hole in their rotation.
“Actually, every year naman, kung ano naging performance namin last year, ang goal is malampasan yung performance nung last season so hopefully, maging ganun yung outcome,” De Jesus said.
Coach De Jesus though made it clear that there are still minor problems that need to be addressed by his players, “Masasabi ko na 85-90% percent kasi marami pa kaming mga small things na kailangan i-polish.”
For the veteran coach, the team that made themselves ready for this coming season is going to seize the volleyball championship in the end.
“Lahat naman nagexpect ng ganun (championship). So kung sino na lang mas prepared na team ang mas papalarin,” adds coach Ramil.
La Salle proved during the UAAP Beach Volleyball Tournament Championship where they bagged their maiden beach volleyball title this season that they are ready to grab the indoors category as well. Fajardo said that they will use that victory to ‘inspire’ the indoors team come next week when they go out the court for the first time this season.
The DLSU Lady Spikers are going to start their campaign against FEU Lady Tamaraws on February 3, Wednesday, 4pm at the PhilSports Arena.
