UAAP Season 80 Team Preview: DLSU Green Spikers (Beach Volleyball)
Lineup: Carlo Sendo, Cris Dumago, Wayne Marco
The De La Salle University Green Spikers are entering the UAAP Season 80 Beach Volleyball tournament with confidence following their seventh place finish in Season 79.
After finishing their Season 79 campaign with a 1-6 card, returning Cris Dumago vows to give La Salle more wins in Season 80. “Pagtatrabahuhan lang namin yung sa training namin, and teamwork,” Dumago shares their strategies.
The Green Spikers, whose lone Beach Volleyball Final Four appearance came five years ago in Season 75, are raring to establish a winning culture within the team. They have gone 2-26 since that season, however, including back-to-back winless campaigns in Seasons 76 and 77. Indeed, the Green Spikers are looking to turn the tables and win more games this season.
Carlo Sendo bares that the team has been working on their communication inside the court. “Yung connection pag nagpplay kasi dalawa lang kayo ‘di ba? So dapat every move ng isa, alam na ng isa.”
Pinagtibay namin yung connection namin na pagdating ng crucial times or pressure, madali na lang kasi alam na namin yung galaw ng bawat isa.”
Sendo, who is also part of the Green Spikers’ Beach Volleyball lineup in Season 78, is hoping that the team will finally break out of the slump in Season 80. And high as it may seem, Sendo definitely just wants the Green Spikers to aim for no less than the championship. “Our goal is of course the championship. We always hope for that.” But he tempers his expectations as he wants the team to take it one game at a time, “By this time, iniisip namin na one game at a time muna. First goal is to make it to the Final Four, and if fortunate enough, Finals and then the rest will follow.”
The Green Spikers are aware of the pressure of playing for La Salle. Hence, they know that they will need a huge amount of patience for them to achieve their goals. “Patience talaga. Yung patience sa isa’t-isa. Dapat mabilis kami makacope up sa pressure, makarecover pag may mga mali,” according to Sendo.
Dumago, who will be playing his third straight year in the UAAP Beach Volleyball, shares the same sentiment as Sendo, which is to take it one game at a time. Compared to last season, Dumago is confident with the outlook of the team in Season 80. “Mas napaghandaan talaga namin ngayon kumpara last season. Mas maganda yung training namin ngayon kaysa last season na halos wala kaming training.”
Sendo supports his teammate as he reiterates the importance of their connection inside the court. “Skills-wise nandun naman. It all boils down sa execution at sa connection ng dalawang nasa court.”
When finally asked what the DLSU Community and the fans can expect from the Green Spikers, Dumago and Sendo are certain, “We will play our hearts out every game and aabot kami sa Final Four. We will make it to the Final Four. We will. Promise.”
