The DLSU Lady Spikers are currently facing the defending champions, UST Golden Tigresses, as of this writing.
Lineup: Tin Tiamzon, May Luna, CJ Saga
After failing to defend their title in Season 79, the De La Salle University Lady Spikers are looking to gain more learning experience in the UAAP Season 80 Beach Volleyball tournament.
Tin Tiamzon, who played in the tournament in Seasons 78 and 79, describes their Season 79 campaign as one bumpy ride for the Lady Spikers. She illustrates that “we would win some games and then lose a few, and then win again.” Her team, which ended with a 4-3 slate, defeated their arch-rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles in the Quarterfinals, before bowing to the FEU Lady Tamaraws in the Semifinals. Tiamzon, nonetheless, tells that it was a very big learning experience for her.
Coming off a third place finish, Tiamzon shares that they have improved their movements and chemistry on the court. “Chemistry among the players, we’ve been roommates na rin so on and off the court, we already know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We know how to boost each other up.”
On the other hand, May Luna, who is playing her first UAAP Beach Volleyball tournament, sees this opportunity as a way to boost her confidence and as preparation for the indoor volleyball games next semester. “Mahirap kunin yung kumpyansa. Kahit nagttraining ka everyday, what if sa real game na? One way din ito para ma-achieve yung kumpyansa namin.”
After ending their title-defense bid in the Semifinals, the Lady Spikers are eager and aiming to return to the Final Four once again. And the keys to achieving that? Luna says a booming start in their campaign would give them the confidence throughout the tournament. “Kailangan makuha agad namin yung kumpyansa namin.” She adds that they also need to trust one another. Tiamzon, meanwhile, states that they just have to stay calm on the court and listen to their coach.
Acknowledging that they are not the most favored to win it all, the Lady Spikers, nevertheless, are confident that they will make it to the Final Four in Season 80, which is their primary goal. Luna and Tiamzon agree that the UST Golden Tigresses, the reigning and defending champions, are still the team to beat. “Playing against UST is already a big experience because Rondina and her partner are both good players.” Tiamzon, however, is raring to take away at least a set from them. “Our goal is to learn from them because they are the defending champions. To take away even just a set from them would be a good prize.”
Luna expresses that the Lady Spikers are not looking forward to specific events. “Gagawin lang namin yung laro namin, no matter what the outcome.” But she bares that the DLSU Community and the fans can expect them to play their best. Tiamzon adds, “expect good games, thrilling games, and perseverance from us.”
