UAAP Season 81 Preview: DLSU Green and Lady Woodpushers
Following strong finishes last season, winning second and first places, respectively, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green and Lady Woodpushers look to once again have dominant runs in the UAAP Season 81.
Head coach Susan Grace Neri believes that the Woodpushers are even hungrier and more disciplined to pick up where they left off. “The team’s willingness to learn in terms of their discipline, the way they show it to me, I saw the fire in them,” observed Neri. She hopes to see her team clinch podium finishes after all the hindrances and changes that they had to take prior to the season.
As their way to condition themselves for the UAAP, the Woodpushers not only trained as a team but also participated in various national and international tournaments. These include the ASEAN Age Group Qualifying Tournament which is the qualifying leg for the ASEAN International Games and sideline tournaments like the Red Kings Tournament. The team join these competitions in order for them to sustain their “in-battle mindset” to check their progress in terms of training.
Green Woodpushers accept challenge
With departures due to graduation of Denzel John Amar, Jeazzir Kline Surposa, and Christian Nañola, respectively, a new generation of Green Woodpushers is set to bring the team back on top. Though it may be a daunting task, the team accepts the challenge and vows to strive for the pride of the University.
The men’s team will banner newbies Davenson Co, Justine Robert Co, Tristan Frech Ibaoc, Raymond Albert Ng, and Richmond Young.
As Coach Neri said for the team “Hope for the best and remain faithful.” This quote will serve as one of their rally cry as they go through the new UAAP Season.
Lady Woodpushers eye a repeat
On the other hand, the Lady Woodpushers, Season 80 Champions, obviously targets a repeat in the new season. Team captain Mira Mirano stated, “Goal talaga namin (is) to maintain the championship.” She also noted that the team is not playing for the name at the back, but rather for the University, the Lasallians, and for the late Ian Lariba, citing the school’s battle cry “#4LaSalleYAN.”
Parading the same champion roster, confidence is sky-high for the team that they can give another championship to the Lasallian community. New Players such as Samantha Glo Revita, Daphne Mae Dy and Franchell Eds Javier, will be part of the Season 81 lineup. Moreover, veterans such as the trio of Mirano, Ella Grace Moulic, and Marie Antoinette San Diego, will be returning for another season. The trio Lady Woodpushers, who are recognized for their participation in the Women’s International Master and the Women’s FIDE Master, are sure key players to watch out for.
With a very talented roster at the helm, Neri looks to devise a program which would capitalize on the players’ intelligence and diligence. “I am capitalizing on intelligence and diligence since the good thing about these is that they are willing to play,” according to Neri, who will likewise be working on her athletes’ strengths and determination for the sport.
The DLSU Green and Lady Woodpushers will open their campaigns on September 19, 2018 at the University of Santo Tomas Gymnasium.
